[Lyrics: Percy Bysshe Shelley]

I met a traveller from an antique land, who said:
"two vast and trunkless legs of stone stand in the desert...
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'my name is Ozymandias, king of kings;
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains.
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Qntal's song Ozymandias I are taken from Percy Bysshe Shelley's classic poem "Ozymandias". The poem tells the story of a traveler who encounters the ruins of a once-great civilization in the desert. The traveler describes seeing two large stone legs without a body, and on a nearby pedestal, the words "my name is Ozymandias, king of kings; Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" The traveler observes that nothing remains of the civilization except for these ruins. The final line of the poem, "The lone and level sands stretch far away," suggests a sense of emptiness and loss.

The song's use of the poem invokes a sense of the transience of power, wealth, and fame. Ozymandias, the king, may have been wealthy and powerful in his time, but his reign has long since passed. The traveler's encounter with the ruins prompts us to reflect on the fleeting nature of human accomplishments and the inevitability of decline and decay. By setting Shelley's words to music, Qntal captures the melancholic beauty and lasting impact of this timeless poem.
