Quarterbacks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Saw your bike
On your front porch
Saw the light
Up in your window
Thought about knocking
On your door
But i was concerned
You had somebody over
I was concerned
You were alone

The night
I first met you
We were dancing
In the living room
And we kissed
In front of everyone
I had waited two years
To talk to you
Helped you move
Into your new house
Left hand prints in the closet
Before we moved you out
Looking up
At that room now
Still half hoping that you'll come down

Because there's such
Relief in coincidence
A universe that finally works
How you always suspected
With yourself near the center
As i get older

I recognize that love
Is mostly situational

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of "Center," the singer sees his love interest's bike on her front porch and a light on in her window. He considers knocking on her door, but hesitates because he fears she might have someone over. He admits that he also worries she might be alone, which may imply that he wants to be with her, but he isn't sure what his presence may mean.

The second verse recalls the night they first met, when they danced in the living room and kissed in front of everyone. He had waited two years to talk to her. He helped her move into her new house, leaving handprints in the closet, but now, as he looks up at her old room, he hopes she'll come down. The chorus reflects the idea of relief in coincidence, that somehow the universe is conspiring to bring them together, with the singer seeing himself near the center of it all. The final verse suggests that love, for him at least, is situational, where the proximity of the beloved is the deciding factor in how he feels.
