Words and music by John Deacon

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows God knows I want to break free

I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love yeah
God knows God knows I've fallen in love

It's strange but it's true
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh how I want to be free baby
Oh how I want to be free
Oh how I want to break free

But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone hey
God knows got to make it on my own
So baby can't you see
I've got to break free

I've got to break free
I want to break free yeah

I want I want I want I want to break free....

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Queen+Paul Rodgers's song "I Want To Break Free" express the singer's desire to break free from someone who has been lying to them. There is a sense of frustration and annoyance towards this person as they are depicted as being "self satisfied" and not needed in the singer's life. They want to be free from their lies and move on. However, there is a contrast in the song as it then goes on to speak of the singer having fallen in love for the first time, implying that this person was someone they were involved with romantically. The singer is torn between wanting to break free and wanting to stay with the one they love. They express it as a kind of conflict, singing that they can't get over the way this person loves them, but even so, they have to be sure before leaving.

The repetition of the lines "God knows" throughout the song suggests the depth and intensity of the singer's emotions. They are seeking validation, perhaps from a higher power, for their feelings and for their need to break free. It brings a sense of desperation to the song, making it clear that this is a deeply personal emotional experience for the singer.

Overall, "I Want To Break Free" is a song about the complexities of relationships and the struggles of wanting to leave a partner who has been deceitful while also being in love with them. The lyrics are honest and raw, expressing the singer's inner turmoil and confusion.

Paul Kept Queen going in their darkest hour......No one can replace Freddie.....But Paul will never get the recognition he so rightfully deserves...He is amazing!

Ryan garrard

Truer words were never spoken.

You can only be who you are: and Paul is a gifted blues/soul man belter. Queen fans are a tough lot, and nobody will ever replace Mercury, but Rodgers held his own.

Space Truckin

Pau Rodgers what a living legend, as Brian May said, they all grew up watching him perform in their younger days and idiolised him.

I love Paul Rodgers and think he did an excellent job here.

This is the first time I listened to Queen without Freddie... and he's not bad .. in fact he's very good. He's not trying to be Freddie. He's a proper rock 'n roll singer.. so .. well done mate. Well done Queen.

Craig Such

I'm a huge fan of Queen but I reckon Paul Rogers is ideal. He brings the soul and blues to Queen songs. Great singer

ivan kovacevic

His voice gave a NEW flavour to this great song. Also, the band played it stronger, bit more rocky.. greatly for Paul the man. And, do I have to say.. thank you Freddy. Thank YOU.
