Queen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do do do...
Take away my sunshine
You take away my rain
I can see it in your eyes
There must be an answer somewhere
You can find a way
I can see it in your eye
Do do do...

Overall Meaning

The opening line "Take away my sunshine, you take away my rain" can be interpreted as the singer feeling like they are missing something that brings joy and positivity into their life. They are essentially saying that the one they are singing to (presumably a lover or close friend) is the source of both their happiness and their sorrows. They are hoping to find an answer to this dependence on the other person and perhaps gain independence. The repetition of "I can see it in your eyes, there must be an answer somewhere" emphasizes the urgency of finding a solution to this reliance on their significant other.

The "do do do..." in between the lyrics serves as an interlude or a pause, allowing the listener to reflect on what has just been said. This is also a signature style in many of Queen's songs. The overall tone of the song is somewhat melancholic and introspective, as the singer is processing their emotions and seeking solutions to their problems. The simplicity of the lyrics is also a representation of the earnestness of the singer's emotions.

It was Smile … the name didn’t change to Queen until after Freddie took over lead vocals.

Also, Tim Staffell is the reason Freddie even met Brian and Roger — Tim and Brian were longtime friends, going back to pre-university days. Then they were in a band together, called 1984.

After that band broke up, Tim and Brian decided to do their own band and placed an ad for a specific type of drummer.
Roger Taylor is the drummer who answered that ad. Thus Smile was born.

Meanwhile, Tim was attending Ealing Art College for a Graphic Design program. Here he met and befriended one Farrokh “Freddie”Bulsara.

London in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s was a hotbed of cutting edge music and art scenes, and inevitably Freddie became part of the scene as well — he attended Smile gigs and became friends with Brian and Roger too, while also participating in other bands like Ibex/Wreckage and with Sour Milk Sea. These other bands didn’t fare very well, but Freddie was undeterred.

When Tim decided to pursue other opportunities, wishing to do a different style of music than Brian and Roger wanted to explore… Freddie presented himself as a replacement for Tim. All they needed was a bassist that could mesh with them (as Tim had also been Smile’s bassist).

It took much trial and error (and the name change to Queen), and several bassists before they found and settled upon a quiet young man named John Deacon on March 1, 1971.
Thus they solidified their lineup for the next 20 years, progressing from “starving students” to “legendary global musical icons” … until Freddie’s tragic and untimely death on November 24, 1991.

This song is definitely an early version of Brighton Rock

@barrymitchell6444

Brighton Rock only occurred as a result of May's live guitar solos during Son And Daughter. But it's certainly the earliest Brighton Rock type of guitar solo available.
