Calling All Girls
Queen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Calling all boys, calling all girls
Calling all people on streets
Around the world
Take this message a message for you
This message is old, yeah
This message is true, this message is
This message is, this message is, this message is
Love take a message of love
Far and near
Take a message of love for all to hear
For all to hear

Some sleepless nights in wait for you
Some foreign presence you feel
Comes seeping through
Some stream of hope
The whole world through
Spread like some silent disease
You'll get yours too
This message is, this message is
This message is, this message is

Love take a message of love
Far and near
Take a message of love for all to hear
For all to hear

Love take a message of love
Far and near
Take a message of love for all to hear
For all to hear

Calling all boys, calling all girls

Calling all boys, calling all girls
Calling all girls...

Overall Meaning

The song "Calling All Girls" is a vibrant and lively call for all people in the world to come together and spread the message of love. The first set of lines in the chorus is an invitation to everyone, regardless of gender, to heed the message of the song. The next lines emphasize the universality of the message: love knows no boundaries or limits; it's for all people in all walks of life.

The second part of the song speaks of the different emotional experiences people across the globe may have - sleepless nights, foreign presence, and a stream of hope. The reference to all these occurrences is likened to a silent disease: they are both contagious and inevitable. These experiences, like a message, are all subtly conveyed and often underestimated. But, the song assures us that beyond them is the message of love that will take a stand regardless of how difficult things seem to be.

In summary, "Calling All Girls" is a song that encourages people around the world to join hands and spread the message of love. Through the song, Queen promotes a sense of unity and hope that ultimately inspires global peace and love.

I don't know why Brian and Roger and so many other people disliked this video. The video makes perfect sense to me. Videos aren't meant to be literal interpretations of songs, but even as a literal interpretation of the song, this video *works perfectly*, in my opinion. And I think the fact that Freddie is the one locked up is even more meaningful and adds a layer of subtle and creative depth that the average Queen fan at the time was probably not even tuned in to.

What I get from this video: This is a song that's telling people to be free, (a theme that's echoed again much later in Innuendo- *Be free, be free, surrender your ego, be free be free to yourself, You can be anything you want to be...*). It's urging people ("calling all boys/girls/around the world) to be individual and not to conform, it's telling them to love freely, love who you love, think freely, the message is love, the message is freedom.

Freddie/Freddie's character tries to live his life that way going about his business (in real life this is also when Freddie is getting more and more comfortable with his sexuality, he cuts his hair and adopts the new mustache "gay clone" look, expressing his gayness more openly and freely). For this act of self expression and individuality, he is attacked by the robots (just like the media and Queen fans turned on him for his mustache and his new look criticizing him because he didn't look the way they were used to).

Freddie tries to fight back but is immediately forced into a cage (of conformity) by the robots (Queen fans / society in general).

His bandmates/friends arrive and unlock the cage (acceptance of Freddie for who he is). As they all escape, Freddie takes a moment destroys all the equipment around (aka Freddie's continuous refusal to conform to expectations or norms of who and what he's supposed to be, refusal to even give interviews starts around this time, but also represents Queen's refusal to be what fans expect them to be) and they all walk out free.

Makes perfect sense. Smart, clever, nuanced, fun and totally appropriate to the song. And makes me love the song even more.

Again, Queen was way ahead of their time with this concept.

I know Hot Space wasn't exactly everyone's favorite album but I'm so proud that they took a risk and did it! I think it's really great that musicians expand their genre and explore what works and what does not work. Queen rocks no matter what!!

I can't watch this video without laughing. it's a great song and a great album (despite the criticism) but it's how everyone is so serious. Rogers face is priceless in all the shots of him, Brian is trying to keep it together and not break down laughing, John is being John, and Freddie is being Freddie doing whatever the hell he's doing around 2 minutes - Queen being Queen 😁
