I Want to Break Free
Queen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self-satisfied, I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free

I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
And this time, I know it for real
I've fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I've fallen in love

It's strange but it's true, yeah
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh, how I want to be free, baby
Oh, how I want to be free
Oh, how I want to break free

But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without, living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own

So baby can't you see
I've got to break free
I've got to break free
I want to break free, yeah
I want, I want, I want, I want to break free

Overall Meaning

"I Want to Break Free" is a classic and timeless song by Queen, which is all about the freedom to be oneself, and the struggle to break free from societal norms, expectations, and the repressive aspects of relationships. The lyrics address the singer’s rebellion against the restrictive nature of his relationship, as he wants to escape the lies and the self-satisfaction that he believes his partner represents. The singer has fallen in love for the first time and is finally breaking free to live a life free of limitations and full of love. He wants to be sure that he can stand on his own two feet and find happiness alone, but fears he will never find love again. While the song is primarily about romantic relationships, it has wider connections to the human condition, both in personal and social contexts.

The first verse is a bold statement of the singer’s intentto break free from the lies that he perceives his partner represents. He is self-assured in his “I don't need you” stance, and his strong-willedness is further emphasized by the repetitions of “I want to break free.” In the second verse, the singer reflects on his newfound love and the depth of his emotions. He has fallen in love for the first time, and he feels it is real, even though it may seem strange. The chorus reflects the singer’s feelings of his yearning for freedom to be his true self.

In the bridge, the singer acknowledges the inherent difficulties in breaking free from the relationship, even as he feels the need to do so. Life is going to continue, and he struggles with the reality of being alone, without his partner by his side. As the song comes to a close, the singer returns to his resolve, declaring in strong and repeated lines, that he wants to break free.

It's been almost 40 years, A message to the future generations: Don't let this beautiful masterpiece die!

@DamienDarkside

Sadly enough, the 55 year olds who were teens at this time are currently promoting laws that restrict LGBT+ people - who would have included Freddy as a target - and wants to pretend they don't exist. You know, the same people who said "the artist formerly known as Prince" instead of "Prince" are suddenly confused at the "sudden rise of LGBT" like they haven't been in your faces since on mainstream since the 70s.
