Freddie Mercury wrote "Life Is Real" as a tribute to John Lennon, whose murder in 1980 had also previously prompted the band to perform his song "Imagine" on tour. Seeing John there filming, Freddie moves in closer and closer, hamming it up for the camera, until he's finally sitting on the piano bench with John.

The problem with Hot Space is that it was an obviously pandering effort after the success of AOBTD and wasn't organic. Freddie thought they had the ear of the clubs and wanted to capitalize on it with more music in that vein. Queen always ventured outside of their usual box and it was never a problem before because it never felt contrived or disingenuous. This time it did. HOT SPACE should have been Freddie's solo debut.

It’s not that bad, but idk it doesn’t feel like Queen, even tho it has some good songs, like Under Pressure (which is the best), Cool Cat, Put Out the Fire, Las Palabras De Amor, Dance, Life is Real, Calling All Girls. I understand the thing that they included some different genres, they’ve always done that, that’s what makes them special. But I still think they could’ve done better. I don’t think it’s a terrible album, it’s a good one, even tho it doesn’t come close to other albums. Plus we should not forget they were going through a difficult time, also Roger and Brian blamed Paul Prenter for the album. Roger said “He wanted our music to sound like you'd just walked in a gay bar...and I didn't”

The problem isn't that they changed their sound. Queen has been experimenting since the beginning. I mean, look at their most popular album. Night at the Opera goes through so many different genres. It has both Seaside Rendezvous and The Prophet's Song.

The problem is that a lot of the songs on Hot Space are bad.

I had one I named Dido, after the singer, and let me tell you that bird could talk up a storm and sing songs clearly all the way through. I'd start the day by singing a medley of songs to her and she picked them up in no time at all. She especially loved What I Like About You by The Romantics. Sadly, Dido managed to get out of her cage on Christmas morning 2013, which is Dido Armstrong's birthday. I cried for weeks and sometimes I still cry when I think of how special she was. Freddie Mercury sounds so like John Lennon, when he sang Life Is Real, (Song For Lennon), the song was a tribute to 1 of his musical heroes, The Beatles's John Lennon, who was shot, and killed, in New York, aged 40, on 8th December, 1980, nearly 2 years before the song was released. Brian May played acoustic guitar, when Kerry Ellis covered Life Is Real, but Kerry Ellis sang, "Freddie Is A Genius", after Freddie Mercury's tragic, premature death, from AIDS, on 24th November, 1991, aged just 45. If Freddie Mercury, and John Lennon were alive, I think they would have been very, very proud, having musical tributes named after them. RIP Freddie, Mr and Mrs Bulsara, Freddie's partner, Jim Hutton, and John Lennon. 😥❤

It would be 39 years, on 8th December, 2019, when John Lennon died, aged just 40, and 28 years, on 24th November, 2019, when Freddie Mercury died, aged just 45. They maybe dead, but their musical legend isn't, and radio stations still play their greatest songs. Their deaths were sad occasions, but we do remember them. As I said, in a previous comment, I wasn't born when John Lennon died, I was only 8 years old, when Freddie Mercury died.

I remember hearing this the first time thinking this gives me Beatles vibes and then I found out he wrote it for Lennon. I'm in love with this song. And I'm gonna say it: the whole Hot Space album was underrated as hell.

I love this song so much! Why it is so underrated i don't know. It shows how devastated Freddie with Lennon's death. Ohhh how awesome it will be if the two of them ever did a song together.

Miss Nez, as I said in previous comments, I was born a few years after John Lennon died and, I was 8 years old, when Freddie Mercury died. If John, or Freddie hadn't died, that would have been a wonderful duet.
