Lucille
Queen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lucille, you won't do your sisters will
Lucille, you won't do your sisters will
You ran out and married but I love you still

Lucille, please come back where you belong
Oh, Lucille, please come back where you belong
I've been good to you, baby, please don't leave me alone
I woke up this morning, Lucille was not in sight
I asked my friends about her but all their lips were tight
Lucille, please come back where you belong
I've been good to you, baby, please don't leave me alone, no

I woke up this mornin', Lucille was not in sight
I asked my friends about her but all their lips were tight
Lucille, please come back where you belong
I've been good to you, baby, please don't leave me alone

Lucille, baby, satisfy my heart, Lucille, baby, satisfy my heart
I played for it baby, and gave you such a wonderful start

Overall Meaning

The song “Lucille” by Queen is a classic blues rock ballad about the pain and disappointment of being left by a lover. The subject of the song is Lucille, who married someone else despite the singer's love for her. The lyrics express the singer's desire for Lucille to come back to where she belongs, and how he has been good to her and wishes for her to satisfy his heart. The repeated refrain of “Lucille, you won't do your sister's will” hints at familial pressure for Lucille to marry someone else instead of the singer.

The opening lines of the song introduce the idea that Lucille has gone against her sister's will and married someone else, causing tension and disappointment. The singer still loves her despite this and wants her back. The second verse goes on to describe how the singer woke up one morning and Lucille was not in sight, prompting him to ask his friends about her. The fact that their “lips were tight” suggests that they know something about her whereabouts but are not willing to divulge any information.

The desperation in the lyrics is emphasized by the repeated pleas for Lucille to come back where she belongs, with the singer reminding her that he has been good to her. The final line of the song, “I played for it baby, and gave you such a wonderful start” could either mean that the singer provided financial support for Lucille or that he helped her career in some way. Either way, it highlights the singer's bitterness at being abandoned despite his efforts to support and help her.

@austriacan

sweet mother of god!!!!! this guy is pure energy and his voice is amazing!!!!!

@patricianoud7096

His voice just so beautiful and what power! It cuts through everything, and imagine this: I can actually hear and understand the lyrics! So many singers make a great loud noise, on key, but the lyrics are totally unintelligible. This man was the ultimate front man... he made everyone in the band better. He makes everyone want to dance and head-bang along. I will miss him forever.

Freddie can cover anyone's song and make it sound better. But--as evidenced by the Freddie Mercury Tribute--no one can do justice to his songs.

@ForzaMilan1899-

absolutely !!! He could cover everything. for example: Lucille, Big Spender, Jaihouse Rock, Stupid Cupid, Tutti Frutti, You´re so square..., Hello Mary Lou, or after Lennon´s death when Freddie covered "Imagine"- just awesome !!! for me even better than the original by Lennon. Freddie had the voice so sing everything: Rock,Hard Rock ballads, opera, disco. The Ultimate Voice !!
