My Fair King
Queen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Aah, aah
In the land where horses born with eagle wings
And honey bees have lost their stings
There's singing forever, ooh yeah
Lion's den with fallow deer
And rivers made from wine so clear
Flow on and on forever
Dragons fly like sparrows thru' the air
And baby lambs where Samson dares
To go on on on on on on

My fairy king can see things
He rules the air and turns the tides
That are not there for you and me
Ooh yeah he guides the winds
My fairy king can do right and nothing wrong

Ah, then came man to savage in the night
To run like thieves and to kill like knives
To take away the power from the magic hand
To bring about the ruin to the promised land, aah, aah

They turn the milk into sour
Like the blue in the blood of my veins
Why can't you see it
Fire burning in hell with the cry of screaming pain
Son of heaven set me free and let me go
Sea turn dry, no salt from sand
Seasons fly no helping hand
Teeth don't shine like pearls for poor man's eyes, aah

Someone, someone has drained the colour from my wings
Broken my fairy circle ring
And shamed the king in all his pride
Changed the winds and wronged the tides
Mother Mercury Mercury
Look what they've done to me

I cannot run, I cannot hide
La la la la la la la la la la la la

Overall Meaning

The song My Fairy King is a fantastical and mystical representation of a world unlike ours, where horses are born with eagle wings, lions are friends with deer, and rivers are made of wine. The world that the lyrics paint is ethereal and otherworldly. The lyrics acknowledge the existence of a fairy king, who rules this magical kingdom and has the power to control the winds and the tides. The fairy king is superior to humans and can do no wrong as he guides the wind. The lyrics create an impression of a pristine and untouched land, but then comes the influence of humans. Humans bring chaos, killing, and destruction. They take away the power of the fairy king and destroy the land he rules over. The milk is turned sour, the seasons are disrupted, and the sea turns dry.

The lyrics reveal the consequences of the actions of humans who have the power to destroy natural resources and how it affects the world around them. The lyrics also touch on the theme of power and how it can be used to either create a utopian civilization or destroy it. Humans, in this case, have destroyed the beauty and the magic of the natural world, leaving the fairy king powerless and helpless.

Songwriters: Freddie Mercury

@itslikethesamebutdifferent8020

I love this song. The combo between Brian’s backward guitar intro, Roger’s high falsetto and Freddie’s piano playing in the beginning is what drew me in. I’ve always thought this so g was somehow prophetic without meaning to be, it is full of metaphors that echo real life, i’ll explain:

When Freddie sings “someone, someone has drained the color from my wings” - i always thought it symbolized the future when he first got infected with the virus & his strength and his power had been taken away.
“Broke in my fairy circle ring”- broken thru his security forces and all the barriers he had set up of close friends.
“And shamed the king in all his pride”- Aids was stigmatized in the 80s and anyone who had it was shamed for having it.
“Changed the winds and wronged the tides”- basically changed the course of his life forever and for the worse.
“Mother mercury look what they’ve done to me”- showing his mother what the person who gave him the virus had done to him.
“I cannot run i cannot hide”- years spent in seclusion while hiding away from the world press also dealing with this virus for which there was no cure.

These are just my ideas. Another theory is that in this song he explains how someone changed him in some way in his life. Maybe a school master that did something to him and caused him to change his sexuality. It sure would explain how his life was going one way and the suddenly it changed. Or maybe they were just really good lyrics.
