The Show Must Go On
Queen + Elton John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Empty spaces what are we living for
Abandoned places I guess we know the score
On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for
Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore

The show must go on
The show must go on
Yeah
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on

Whatever happens, I'll leave it all to chance
Another heartache, another failed romance
On and on, does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess I'm learning (I'm learning), I must be warmer now
I'll soon be turning (turning, turning, turning), round the corner now
Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark I'm aching to be free

The show must go on
The show must go on (yeah yeah)
Ooh, inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on

Yeah

My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die
I can fly my friends

The show must go on, yeah
The show must go on
I'll face it with a grin
I'm never giving in
On with the show

Ooh, I'll top the bill, I'll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
(On with the show, on with the show)

Show (show must go on, go on)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Queen’s song “The Show Must Go On” with Elton John embody the spirit of persevering in the face of adversity. The opening lines, “Empty spaces what are we living for, Abandoned places I guess we know the score, On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for” suggest a sense of futility in life, and a question of the purpose of existence. The lyrics continue with “Another hero, another mindless crime, Behind the curtain, in the pantomime, Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore” evoke a sense of exhaustion and perhaps despair in the world.

However, in the face of all of these difficulties, “The show must go on”. The chorus acknowledges the need to keep pushing forward despite the obstacles - “Inside my heart is breaking, My make-up may be flaking, But my smile still stays on, The show must go on, The show must go on.” The lyrics seem to suggest that even though life may be difficult, we still need to put on a brave face and carry on with our lives regardless. The final verse “My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies, Fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die, I can fly my friends” sets a tone of hope and whimsy, as if to remind us that although life may be tough, there is still wonder and beauty in the world, enough to keep us going.

He didn't sing this to contest with Freddie Mercury, he sang it to honour him. He deserves credit for that. Some people here fail to realize that.

Elton was a great friend of Freddie’s and even visited him on his deathbed. LOYALTY

@RB747domme

Angie L I'm not entirely certain Elton actually visited Freddie ON his deathbed..

..If he did, then that's probably best kept prrivate between Elton and Freddie.

@joshualaedtke2043

Freddie never had a deathbed

@juliact

@@RB747domme He did. There's video of it. I'm not sure how close it was to the end, but he visited Freddie regularly after Freddie became house-bound. He used to sneak in the back, but I think the last time he came, he said, F*** it, and came in the front door. The press door-stopped him and asked him what he was doing there, he said, "I'm simply visiting a friend". God bless you Elton.
