The Show Must Go On
Queen Elton John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Empty spaces, what are we living for?
Abandoned places, I guess we know the score
On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for?
Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore?

The show must go on
The show must go on
Yeah
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on

Whatever happens, I'll leave it all to chance
Another heartache, another failed romance
On and on, does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess I'm learning (I'm learning), I must be warmer now
I'll soon be turning (turning, turning, turning), 'round the corner now
Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark I'm aching to be free

The show must go on
The show must go on (yeah yeah)
Ooh, inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on

Yeah

My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die
I can fly my friends

The show must go on, yeah
The show must go on
I'll face it with a grin
I'm never giving in
On with the show

Ooh, I'll top the bill, I'll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
(On with the show, on with the show)

Show (show must go on, go on)

Overall Meaning

In Queen Elton John's song, "The Show Must Go On," the lyrics seem to explore the struggles of life and the pressure to keep going no matter what. The opening lines suggest a sense of hopelessness and a desperate search for meaning in the midst of the "empty spaces" and "abandoned places" that surround us. The chorus of the song repeats the mantra "the show must go on," reflecting a sense of determination to keep moving forward despite the challenges we face.

The second verse continues the theme of uncertainty and the search for meaning in life, with the lyrics describing "another heartache, another failed romance" and a sense of confusion about what we are living for. The line "I guess I'm learning, I must be warmer now" suggests a desire to improve and grow as a person, but also a sense of pressure to do so quickly. The bridge of the song shifts into a more uplifting tone, with the lyrics describing how the singer is painted "like the wings of butterflies" and can fly.

Overall, the song seems to be a powerful reflection on the human experience and the resilience that we must cultivate in order to keep going, even when life gets tough.

He didn't sing this to contest with Freddie Mercury, he sang it to honour him. He deserves credit for that. Some people here fail to realize that.

Elton was a great friend of Freddie’s and even visited him on his deathbed. LOYALTY

@RB747domme

Angie L I'm not entirely certain Elton actually visited Freddie ON his deathbed..

..If he did, then that's probably best kept prrivate between Elton and Freddie.

@joshualaedtke2043

Freddie never had a deathbed

@juliact

@@RB747domme He did. There's video of it. I'm not sure how close it was to the end, but he visited Freddie regularly after Freddie became house-bound. He used to sneak in the back, but I think the last time he came, he said, F*** it, and came in the front door. The press door-stopped him and asked him what he was doing there, he said, "I'm simply visiting a friend". God bless you Elton.
