The Show Must Go On
Queen Feat. Elton John Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Abandoned places, I guess we know the score
On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for
Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore
The show must go on
The show must go on, yeah
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on
Whatever happens, I'll leave it all to chance
Another heartache, another failed romance
On and on, does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess I'm learning (I'm learning learning learning)
I must be warmer now
I'll soon be turning (turning turning turning)
Round the corner now
Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark I'm aching to be free
The show must go on
The show must go on, yeah yeah
Ooh, inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on
Yeah yeah, whoa wo oh oh
My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die
I can fly, my friends
The show must go on (go on, go on, go on) yeah yeah
The show must go on (go on, go on, go on)
I'll face it with a grin
I'm never giving in
On, with the show
Ooh, I'll top the bill, I'll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
On with the show
On with the show
The show, the show must go on
Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on
Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on
Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on
Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on
Go on, go on
"The Show Must Go On" by Queen featuring Elton John is a powerful and moving song that deals with the theme of perseverance in the face of adversity. The opening lyrics "Empty spaces, what are we living for? Abandoned places, I guess we know the score" evoke a sense of emptiness and despair, questioning the meaning of life in the face of the pain and suffering we experience. The following line "On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for?" suggests a longing for purpose and fulfillment that seems elusive and out of reach. The next lines "Another hero, another mindless crime, Behind the curtain, in the pantomime, Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore" allude to the sense of disillusionment and apathy that characterizes our society, where we are bombarded by stories of tragedy and injustice and yet we seem to have lost the will to fight against them.
The chorus "The show must go on" serves as a rallying cry, a call to action to persevere despite the odds, to keep on fighting and not give up. The singer acknowledges the pain and heartbreak they are experiencing, but resolves to keep going, to put on a brave face and carry on. The lines "Inside my heart is breaking, My make-up may be flaking, But my smile still stays on" are particularly poignant, highlighting the resilience and determination that is necessary to keep going in the face of adversity. The song ends on a hopeful note, with the singer proclaiming "I'll top the bill, I'll overkill, I have to find the will to carry on" suggesting that, despite the pain and struggle, there is still hope for a brighter future.

He didn't sing this to contest with Freddie Mercury, he sang it to honour him. He deserves credit for that. Some people here fail to realize that.

Angie L I'm not entirely certain Elton actually visited Freddie ON his deathbed..
..If he did, then that's probably best kept prrivate between Elton and Freddie.
@joshualaedtke2043
Freddie never had a deathbed
@juliact
@@RB747domme He did. There's video of it. I'm not sure how close it was to the end, but he visited Freddie regularly after Freddie became house-bound. He used to sneak in the back, but I think the last time he came, he said, F*** it, and came in the front door. The press door-stopped him and asked him what he was doing there, he said, "I'm simply visiting a friend". God bless you Elton.
