I Want To Break Free
Queen Paul Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free

I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love yeah
God knows God knows I've fallen in love

It's strange but it's true
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh how I want to be free baby
Oh how I want to be free
Oh how I want to break free

But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone hey
God knows got to make it on my own
So baby can't you see
I've got to break free

I've got to break free
I want to break free yeah

I want, I want, I want, I want to break free

Overall Meaning

The song "I Want to Break Free" by Queen Paul Rodgers is a powerful anthem about a person who wants to break free from a relationship that is suffocating them. The opening lines of the song, "I want to break free/ from your lies/ you're so self-satisfied I don't need you" are an indictment of the partner's behavior, and suggest that the relationship is built on lies and dishonesty. The lyrics convey a sense of desperation and frustration, as the singer tries to extricate themselves from the relationship.

As the song continues, the singer reveals that they have fallen in love for the first time, and it is a genuine and profound experience. However, they are torn between their desire to be with this person and their need to break free from the suffocating relationship that they are currently in. The chorus of the song, with its insistent repetition of "I want to break free," conveys a sense of urgency and desperation.

Ultimately, the singer realizes that they must break free from the relationship in order to be true to themselves and their feelings. The song is a powerful expression of the human desire for freedom and authenticity, and a reminder that sometimes we must make difficult choices in order to live our lives to the fullest.

You can only be who you are: and Paul is a gifted blues/soul man belter. Queen fans are a tough lot, and nobody will ever replace Mercury, but Rodgers held his own.

Pau Rodgers what a living legend, as Brian May said, they all grew up watching him perform in their younger days and idiolised him.

I love Paul Rodgers and think he did an excellent job here.

This is the first time I listened to Queen without Freddie... and he's not bad .. in fact he's very good. He's not trying to be Freddie. He's a proper rock 'n roll singer.. so .. well done mate. Well done Queen.

Craig Such

I'm a huge fan of Queen but I reckon Paul Rogers is ideal. He brings the soul and blues to Queen songs. Great singer

His voice gave a NEW flavour to this great song. Also, the band played it stronger, bit more rocky.. greatly for Paul the man. And, do I have to say.. thank you Freddy. Thank YOU.
