Bridge
Queensrÿche Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You called me up on the phone today
Struggling with the right words to say.
Time can change a thing or two.
Time has changed the lives of me and you,
But you know it could have been different dad.

The word brings back a sweet memory.
I'm sitting on a bluff on a broken tree,
By my side a distinguished man
Giving me encouragement, telling me I can,
And you know you're not there.

You say, "Son, let's forget the past,
I want another chance, gonna make it last."
You're begging me for a brand new start,
Trying to mend a bridge that's been blown apart,
But you know you never built it dad.

So I sit here through the night,
And I write myself to sleep,
And time keeps ticking

Time has made you finally realize
Your loneliness and your guilt inside.
You're reaching for something you never had,
Turning around now you're looking back,
And you know I'm not there.

You say, "Son, let's forget the past.
I want another chance, gonna make it last."
You're begging me for a brand new start,

Trying to mend a bridge that's been blown apart,
But you know you never built it dad.

Overall Meaning

The song “Bridge” by Queensrÿche, tells the story of a father and son who have grown apart and the father is seeking to reconnect with his son. The son is reminiscing about a time when he was with his father, sitting on a bluff on a broken tree, with a distinguished man who was giving him encouragement and urging him on. The son is also consumed with regret and sadness, feeling abandoned by his father.

The song speaks about the impact of time and how it can change things, how things could have been different if the father had been more present in the son's life. The father is now remorseful and asking for a chance to repair their relationship, but the son is hesitant, feeling that the bridge between them was never built by his father.

It's a poignant song about the complexity of relationships between parents and children and how important it is to build bridges of communication and trust while there is still time.

Guys, back in 1994 when I listened to bridge first time I found the lyrics to put on the thoughts I had since my father left me and my mom but he never called me and now he past away last week.

Thanks for all the music and lyrics you given me it means all to me.

I worked for you back in the 90th when you played in Copenhagen and it still stands to me as the best sound experience ever in KB Hallen

Much love ❤️

@sixteezchild

It so reminded of my daughter and her dad! She was 8 when it came out and immediately it was about her dad. Nothing has changed...powerful words!

@Caltops78

One of my favorite underrated Queensryche songs. Brings back a lot of memories hearing this

@endtyme

This whole album has a lot of stripped down to the basic, great songwriting. Not all that pomp & circumstances from the previous records. I love that!

@Caltops78

@ENDTYME - Occult Rock I love singing along to “promised land” and “someone else” and losing my voice. I turn up the volume loud so I don’t have to hear myself.

@endtyme

@Caltops78 I sing in my car when I´m alone and can turn up. Same reason ;-)
