I kinda liked it. Just got back from seeing it. Is it a well made horror film? No, but I was entertained. I thought the twist at the end was actually pretty clever, and Tree's (yes the main characters real first name is Tree) character arc was satisfying. Speaking of Tree, she wasn't a horrible person her entire life. There was a line in the scene when she meets up with her father where she implies she was acting that way because of the grief she felt over her mothers death. Of course, the film is still trashy and full of plot holes. For example, if the real killer's motive was because she was jealous over her affair with the professor, then why did she kill him on the 8th (or ninth I can't remember which one) day? She doesn't have reset powers, so how would she sleep with him then? Is she a Necrophiliac? Anyway, I may not agree with you this time, but your content was awesome as always. Keep up the good work Adam 😁_👍

The fact is films cast kids the same aprox. age for middle school and then BAM, high schoolers are all played by 25 year olds. I get it's hard for legal reasons because of work time or maybe sex scenes but, as pointed out like 500 times before, there are plenty 18, 19, 20 year olds who look younger. But they always cast muscular 25 yo dudes and all these people with perfect skin and shit. And DON'T EVEN START with the "child actors suck" stuff like it wasn't pure aesthetic decision and most of the 25 yo actors in those movies didn't suck HARD.
Also most of these movies center around characters in their last year of high school.

Then the roommate changes the ringtone on her phone the night before while she is drunk as a surprise on her birthday. I like how the "Oh, it's supposed to be a comedy/genre deconstruction!" excuse is used more and more regarding horror movies. Even if Happy Death Day is supposed to be a comedy, does that make it a better movie? If you watch it as a dark love story, does that make the Death Note movie any better?

I liked it! It didn't take itself too seriously. I went with my friend and we had so much fun with it! It's not by any means a BAD movie it just isn't very artsy or groundbreaking and there is NO shame in that. I love YMS I agree with his opinions at times or don't but will get a good laugh out of it because what he is saying is true.

Honestly I had a pretty good time watching this. Like he said, I did buy tickets to go in and laugh at it and I did. I wasn't scared, but it was enjoyable and I appreciated the hour and a half of entertainment I got from it. Maybe it's not a successful horror, but it's a great comedy if you, like he said, don't think about it. It's a dumb fun kind of movie. I think 2/10 is a little harsh considering everything. Maybe closer to a 3.5 or 4

to me regarding the whole "she takes more time to get out of the room at the start of the day, but the day plays out the same way" flaw falls under suspension of disbelief. Groundhog Day had the exact same flaw - some days he runs right out of the hotel and sprints toward the fest, some days he talks to people or does other stuff, but he still bumps into Ned right as he's walking by, still sees the same things happening at the same time, etc.

Not excusing it - it's definitely a flaw, but with these kinds of movies I think it's okay from a storytelling perspective. Like in your Looper review when you explained the issues with the logic of the movie and said "if you recognize that this is a flaw but you can enjoy the movie anyway that's fine! but don't pretend it's not a flaw" I feel the same way about this. I recognize it's a narrative flaw but I don't think it breaks the movie at all if you can get pulled in.

long comment aside, I still haven't seen Happy Death Day, so maybe it's still a piece of shit regardless.

Here's my rule:
The amount of times you see ads for a movie depicts the quality of the movie (there are exceptions of course). This movie was advertised everywhere and it turned out to be a piece of shit. Baby Driver was hardly ever advertised and that movie was great.

I was just happy this movie didn't take itself too seriously. It was wholly self-aware imo, and I found it enjoyable, even if I have a ton of questions. "Why did the doctor have the villain's mask in his desk drawer if he wasn't the real villain?" "Why did they set up the protagonist having internal scarring when it was never gonna come back up again?" "Why did Subway guy exist if they were never gonna resolve it?" "Why did the naked scene and fart joke scene not fit in with the tone for the rest of the film?" "Why does the protagonist rule out that one girl because they both got hit by a bus? That birthday card should've made her the primary suspect for the rest of the film."

Both Wikipedia and IMDB have this listed as a comedy. It's blatantly a comedy, with more comedic elements than horror elements. The first "day" is framed as a horror flick, but once the loop starts it absolutely goes straight into a comedy. If I remember correctly, there's even a montage of her getting killed, with the premise showing her growing frustration, not her growing fear, obviously intending to set the tone as comedic.

I've seen YMS do this before, where he gets it into his head that the movie is going to follow a pattern, then ignores anything the movie does that deviates. Someone else pointed out that he missed a bit of CA: Civil War, and criticized the movie based on HIS missing of the information.

Anyways, I still love the channel, no one is perfect.

This film didn't work as a horror film because the My Little Pony movie was more threatening, and it didn't work as a comedy because the acting and the writing were forced and awkwardly delivered. The idea of time loops are great, and I would love if a movie or game or story played around with this idea more. The problem is that it's not easy to write well, and a lot of time loop stories fall flat, especially if the protag is a dumbass or the looping events wre not consistent.

I went to see it after a reviewer gave it a c+, but it was exactly as bad as I thought it was.

the commentary you just gave was funnier than any comedy i have ever seen....it actually made me want to go see the movie to find out how shitty it is. before i watch it i have a theory: the person who kills her is who ever she is being a super bitch to in the beginning and once she decides to be a non-super bitch her life returns to normal.

I went into the movie theatre with super, super low expectations and came out fairly happy. Movie isn't great or original by any means, a lot of the dialogue was cringy and the character arc was super predictable. As well, guessing who the killer was fairly easy (I guessed it on her third day when she was talking to Carter and he said to list everyone who knows it's your BD) but I still smiled here and there and that's more than I was expecting.

Saw Happy Death Day and Blade Runner this weekend and I can without a shadow of a doubt I enjoyed this movie A LOT more. This movie had it's cheese BUT 2049 was so slow and Leto was annoying and he's barely in it. If 2049 had better pacing then I'd probably enjoy it more but the first hour was rough.

Meh, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. And come on, that mascot is horrifying. It's too uncanny to passed decision making when I came to the school mascot, like wtf. Also, the only real gripe my wife and I had was the massive plot hole since an important factor of the film was never explained.

They do officially state it. Everytime she exits the dorm you can see a sticker (bottom-left of the 'rest of your life' one she hates). It has the school mascot and says "Belmont Babies", I can't remember the school name but I was shocked and a bit taken-aback when I saw the official mascot was the babies.

I remember being a shitty little second-grader trying to be cool and edgy and I thought of "What's a way to spin something happy into something dark?" The first idea I came up with was Happy Death Day and even as the shitty little shit of a primary schooler I was I knew it was too terrible of an idea to leave my mind.

Honestly, that mask reminds me of the one Matt Helms wears in NMH2. And considering how a couple of people gave him the nickname "Peado Mask", I guess that at least has some creep factor, even if it's more on like the "pervert down the street" type of creep factor.

I thought this was purposely horror comedy lol. I mean, there are times where the movie was genuinely trying to be funny, like in the middle part where she keeps getting killed over and over again while attempting to find her killer and found out that one of her exes was secretly gay.
Once you instill in your soul that this is horror comedy, it magically becomes better.

The anime/visual novel "Higurashi no naku koro ni" is essentially a better version of this.
In essence, each arc one in a group of friends inevitably goes insane and starts murdering the rest. It keeps on repeating through different scenarios (Each being about 5-6 episodes) as you get to know more about the characters and what leads to their trigger.
As the series progresses, it reveals more about why this is happening and the attempts to stop it.

I don't even really like anime as an artistic medium, but I'd consider this one of the best series I have watched. From movies to live-action TV series.

My friends are currently in the theatres watching this. Can't wait to hear what they have to say about it. Bad horror movies are fun to laugh at so hopefully they'll realise that's the only thing its good for XD

Groundhog Day itself also has this same problem of the same things happening at the same places to the main character everyday despite them taking more time or less time to get out of bed in the morning or whatever.
