The alien escaped.
Basically Jake Gyllenhall and the lady tried to escape with escape pods; the plan was that Jake flies away with the alien inside the pod and lady escapes to earth. We see how one pod lands in the ocean and some fishermen go ahead and inspect it. Whats inside? You guessed it. THE FUCKING ALIEN. ITS THE MOTHERFUCKING ALIEN.

then we see the other pod with the lady inside floating away into the emptiness of space with her screaming like a crazy person.

When the film ended and the credits rolled, all I did was mutter "Sheesh." Since the audience was very small, everyone heard me. As we were leaving, I made note of my skepticism about Calvin being a threat to humanity to the guy in the row in front of me. We talked a bit, and we concluded that Calvin's chances of actually conquering Earth weren't that great for the following reasons:

1) Earth is a new environment, one that Calvin might not be able to adapt to.
2) No weapons were used against it, so is Calvin bulletproof? Probably not.
3) Calvin doesn't seem to like cold weather, so General Winter might save the day.

During the last scene I leaned over to my mom and whispered "Plot twist that's actually Jake Gyllenhaal's pod". That then happened and I was stunned they would go to that level of stupidity. Then they played the song "spirit in the sky" for the credits and I didn't even know what to do with myself at that point.

slendernyan I understand that, but there there is a point where it crosses the line from a twist to being false advertising, and that can really piss an audience off! Personally I think that it goes too far and although I would go to see the film for the premise, others would go for Ryan Reynolds and would be cheated out of seeing him throughout the film like they expected

The scientist couldn't feel Calvin on his leg because he was paraplegic. It was pretty creative, actually. He could float in space without his chair but you could clearly see his legs were emaciated and he even explained he hoped the alien could lead to advancements that might help him.

Yeah, I felt the same way during the movie. The only guy I found myself caring about was the Asian guy because he at least had a family that was shown, all the other characters were more alien than the actual alien. There were so many points in the movie where they could have just stopped the alien effortlessly but they just went ahead and commuted the dumbest sequence of decisions imaginable.

Well to be fair the alien hitched himself on the guy's leg because he was paralyzed, and the reason he didn't tell the others was because he honestly didn't know it was on his leg, he couldn't feel it. Not because he wanted his "alien child" to sabotage the crew.

I see the points your making, but I just enjoyed it for what it was. It was a fun, entertaining horror movie with some awfully disturbing death scenes. (That first death made me feel sick, and I'm a huge horror buff). A solid movie with flaws, but an awesome cast and some memorable scenes.

Adam you're the man. I saw this film 2 days ago and it was boring as hell. Word for word I agree with you. The introductions of the characters, the decisions they make and the structure is so wack. Honestly the film should have been done after (SPOILER)(SPOILER)(SPOILER)(SPOILER) the woman dies in space. Why didn't she just push herself off into space instead of stopping Jake Gyleanafhfagonfdfl from opening the door? It's just stupid. The only thing I like is the little twist at the end. I found it funny more than anything. Great video again Adam, I hope your channel gets the recognition it deserves this year

Basically Jake lured the alien into an escape pod and was gonna shoot himself off into space while the other astronaut (the second woman) was gonna go to Earth in an escape pod. It shows a pod land onto Earth and it reveals that it was Jake's pod with the alien like mutating inside of it and we find out that the woman's pod hit a satellite and diverted it's course and went off into space. The alien basically stopped Jake from directing the pod away from Earth.

It sounds hella confusing and I'm sorry but like one of the last few scenes was of the woman screaming in space knowing that she fucked up was by far the best part in the film

Its weird because I thought the exact same thing. Then you would've had a movie that lasted for only 40 minutes tops though.

I wouldn't call it boring, its definitly hectic and watchable at times but everything is just so predictable.

I feel like the scenes leading up to a character dying were decent as it's as you said hectic but like everything between it was just boring. Like the start before the whole hand crushing scene. It was so plain and generic. Even the scene where they're like sitting down chilling it was so bland.

Maybe I just have space movie fatigue (Passengers, Interstellar, The Martian. All good/decent films btw) but it doesn't try anything new. One thing I will say to defend one scene is when they see the alien on the black guy's leg. I thought he didn't know because he's crippled (I'm pretty sure he can't walk but was able to move about by floating) so he couldn't feel his legs

I found myself nodding my head throughout the whole video. I agree with virtually everything you said, but I guess I didn't really weigh those flaws as heavily as you did because despite them, I really really liked this movie. Gravity wasn't too suspenseful of a movie to me, but I found my heart beating throughout basically this whole film and I thought it was really emersive and we'll directed. (Except for the long shot at the beginning, they were trying too hard to be like Gravity with that one)

One of the things that bugged me, was the fact that alien was shown being able to use tools in the first scene when he became hostile. Yet it never came up later in the movie.
Like in that scene with the Japanese guy when he locked himself in his bed chamber, wouldn't this supposedly intelligent and quickly adapting alien life form try to pry it open with something hard that was in the room, i don't know, even bash it with something. But nope, it just kinda squeezes it and goes away when the attempt failed, because it is clearly too intelligent and sophisticated for simple tools, now that it became a tentacle monster.

6:42, i hate to rain on your parade adam even though i totally agree with the rest of your video. But the reason why that character had the alien on his leg was because he was crippled and couldn't feel his legs in the first place. I thought that was one of the better aspects of the movie, an actual plot device using a characters disability as a horror aspect, whilst being the only smart time the alien escapes captivity in he entire film.

When Adum was talking about the part where the alien was coiled around that guys leg, I think Adum misunderstood what was happening. Adum said he thought the guy was trying to sabotage the crew by keeping the alien wrapped up in his leg and that he didn't want to destroy it because it was his baby, but that wasn't what happened. That guy hated that little alien fucker as much as the rest of the crew, maybe more so because of the way the alien crushed his hand and wrist to pieces, so he wasn't trying to hide it or protect it from everyone else, he wanted the thing dead as well, he just didn't know it was on his leg. It shows a few times in the movie that that guy is paralyzed from the waist down so he had no idea the alien was coiled on his leg. When Adum first said he was protecting it because it was his baby I was confused, lol. There is no way that guy wanted that thing to survive after crushing his hand, killing his friends, and hunting them down, he wanted that fucker dead before it could kill everyone and try and hitch a ride to Earth. The only reason the alien was able to sneak in and hitch a ride on one of the crew is because that crew member had no feeling in his legs so that alien could have locked on to his leg and squeezed hard enough to shatter the bone and he would have had no idea about it because he couldn't feel it was there. As many flaws as this movie had, and it had a few, there were a few things that I actually enjoyed watching it. It is by no means a great movie, nor is it by any means a bad movie, it was a good movie. One of the small details I actually found clever and thought was kind of cool was that scene where they are all sitting around and don't know the alien is there because it attached itself to the paralyzed leg of one of the crew. My favorite part of the movie has to be the end though. I love how the film makers decided to end the movie with a potential worldwide catastrophe instead of making yet another movie with a "happy" ending. ( I put happy in quotes because Jake Gyllenhaal would of still had to die to prevent the alien from reaching earth, but it would have been a "happy" ending because the alien would have been floating in deep space instead of contaminating earth.) I love when movies don't have some super happy ending. The Mist has the best ending ever, but Life has a pretty fucked up ending too. I love how they filmed it, they made it seem like the plan worked all along, then all of a sudden we see the woman who was supposed to get back to Earth is floating off, and Jake Gyllenhaal is on Earth with the alien instead of floating off into deep space with it, and then all the fishermen start to arrive at Jake Gyllenhaals pod and start trying to open it despite the fact that he is covered in alien tentacles and screaming for them to get away and not open the hatch.

Thank you for doing this quickie! Was dragged to this movie and as much as I tried to get into it I just had to laugh at how silly the characters were. The ending was the final nail in the coffin. Avoid the movie, its not worth it.

The scene where 'Calvin' is wrapped around Hugh's leg didn't because Hugh considered him his baby, it's because he was disabled and didn't have any feeling or control in legs. You missed a few little things but otherwise pretty solid points Adum.

It only destroyed the communications because it was eating the coolant, which also cooled the communications stuff. So once it ate the coolant for the communications stuff, the gear overheated which was what destroyed it. The alien's just trying to survive at first, but it does get smarter.

I liked it, that's a first because I hate 90% of movies and TV I watch. But I've always been, not scared but rather unsettled by this idea. The monster itself was bland but that was intentional so I won't fault them for that. Some points I thought "because movie" and it took me out of it. The sound design was erry but annoying because of the typical Hollywood loud sudden sound for no reason.

The ending was my favourite part. As I've said I've always been fascinated by this premise, the twist whereby the woman flew off into space to die I did not see coming and it was ballsy of them, however, it felt like sequel bait and this movie cannot have a sequel it doesn't work in wide open spaces.

SIDE NOTE: The American sounding woman being British annoyed me.

EDIT: When their comms went down they never fully explained what happened, they went down before he hate the coolant. That pissed me off I was so close to turning it off. All the characters seemed to do was want to be the hero and fuck up everything.

Hi Adam, I just wanted to clarify one point that you seemed a bit confused on - the scientist guy (such deep characterization) who had the alien wrapped around his leg wasn't trying to sabotage his crew mates. He was handicapped and paralyzed from the waist down, so he couldn't feel the alien when it was wrapped around his leg. He didn't know it was there, but he knew he was losing blood. Everything that Adam said is true, yet I still enjoyed it. Yes, I will forget about it in 3 months. This is the kind of movie that will get many replays on some movie channel and people will use it for backfround noise.

I'm sorry that you didn't like it :) I see all the flaws you pointed out, maybe it was just too personal to me in the sense that I always wanted to see real life found on other planets and this is the very worst case scenario.

Funniest scene in the film is right off the bat: the International Space Station putting itself in the way of a probe coming at it like a meteor so Ryan Reynolds can manually operate its robotic arm from the outside like a multi-billion dollar catcher's mitt.

After I saw this film I asked my biology teacher if it would be possible for an organism to be made up of cells that are simultaneously a nerve cell, muscle cell, and a photo receptive cell and she basically laughed because that idea is so impossible and stupid.

Just a note, they mention that they pump glucose into the creatures tank as they're reviving it. So it doesn't quite start growing totally "out of thin air".

VAGUE SPOILERS I GUESS

Otherwise I thought the death scenes were pretty neat. The first death and the space walk were actually pretty visceral in my opinion. When the leg scene happened I couldn't help but think of that one scene in "Land of the Lost", where Will Ferrell gets bit by a mosquito.

The final scene was actually fairly well done I thought, even though the cup game was blatantly obvious, the atmosphere (hah) of the scene was pretty great. The music (though fairly stock) fills you with dread, and the screams were really quite haunting.

My major problem with the film (out of many) is the fact the alien, that is the size of a hand has the ability within minutes to know that the humans must communicate to earth via some array, what the communications array is, where it is and how to destroy it. But doesn't hack the computers to open all the doors at once within another 2 mins? What? If it can learn so fast why not keep learning?

Why is it in horror films they always lose contact with possible aid? I feel like if they contact people for help, the help doesn't always need to arrive split second. The whole "THE COMMS ARE DOWN SON" shit seems so lazy.

Bill Anderson I considered that as well. Or if they do this, make it out of circumstance not just plot convenience.

What if to contact aid, they had to get to a comms room. On the way there, about half way the alien ambushes them and it becomes a dash to the comms room to get behind the door and lock it out.

They all make it, and begin the transmission. But, the alien manages to get in the room through an air hatch/glass window etc and kills one of the team. During the panic to escape the locked room and fighting to survive, the comms equipment gets severly damaged beyond repair. The remainder of the team escape and the film continues.

I'm no writer, and that is a pretty basic set up I wrote out. But in my opinion it comes over better in a horror film about an animal like alien killing peeps, rather than "IT KNOWS ABOUT COMMS SYSTEMS LOL OH DEAR".

I did actually find this movie better then I tought it would be. What it really lacked was character development. You did not really come to care for the characters when the alien started to kill people and the movie seemed to be rushing towards that point. But visualy it was really good and did create a crepy atmosphere (pun intended). And i did kinda like that the movie did not have a nice happy ending for a change.

Yes it has flaws, but with enough suspension of disbelief its very enjoyable because its really well made and executed especially for its budget. For Alien clone it's much better than Prometheus.
