I don't get why editors aren't allowed to do more pyschoactive hallucination enducing substances and then let the audience decide it was intentional. seems like a great way to get a conversation started. If you make a movie just bring your editor some LSD coffee and watch the magic happen

@Bin Frishinger It was intentional and totally obvious. There is a shot where Leo looks down the staircase, the next cut is a perspective shot showing loads of stairs (indicating that this is what Leo sees), It then cuts to a wide shot which is meant to show you an objective view of what is happening and it shows only a few steps.
The times when there at lots of steps are when the camera is close to Leo indicating that this is what he percieves.
The times when there are few steps are when the camera is further away, indicating what a person would see if they were looking at it from a distance.

So I just saw Your movie sucks quickie on "The Wolf of Wall Street" and it was pretty good. A few editing mistakes that could of been fixed, like there was this one point in the video where he was giving a rating and he seemed to of changed his mind and said seven but then changed it to eight, just kind of seemed a bit sloppy but didn't take away from the overall enjoyment of the film. and I give this one a 7/10

So I just read this comment chain after four years and boy, it did not age gracefully. My main problem is the inconsistent writing quality which is decent at best and clunky at worst. It could definitely use moderation to highlight the actually funny comments and cut the redundant and repetitive ones. So while I did have fun, especially early on, the chain quickly becomes quite a drag and I can only give this thread a five out of tennnnn.

So what turned me onto this movie was how I was at the theater buying tickets for some other film and a woman had just walked out during the middle of Wolf of Wall Street, and for some reason found the need to walk up to the cashier next to us and no, not ask for a refund, but to tell the woman how horrible she thought the movie was because of all the sex, drugs, and violence there was in it and to NEVER RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE TO ANYONE EVER followed by "Disgusting" then storming off.
So as soon as that movie was out for rent I bought it and watched it and enjoyed it very much with the added bonus of knowing the same woman who despised this film had incoherently recommended this film to me.

Considering this is a Martin Scorsese film, the fact that it stayed consistently busy despite its long run time makes sense, it is the same thing as Casino, one of my favorite movies. Scorsese has a knack for making films that are long without dragging on.

yes... the stairway changing is supposed to reflect the level of drugs he's using during that time. Where if your muscles are numbed out to that point, 3 steps can seem like an insurmountable height.

(take this as a complement) I recently went back and started watching some of your way older reviews. I use to love them but I just can't watch them anymore because your new content has sky rocked it up in humor and quality compared to some of your later work.

Seriously it made me appreciate how funny the death race and walking dead and even the quickie reviews really are. Don't get me wrong your older stuff is still funny but compare it to your new reviews and it doesn't even compare.

Im saying this as a good thing you're someone who is starting to master his craft.

I immediately recognized the changing staircase. It was definitely a part of his qualuude trip. By the way, that scene was probably the best scene in a movie all year next to the hanging scene in 12 Years A Slave.

I loved this film. Even I though it was VERY similar to The Goodfellas. The narrating is exactly the same lol. Jordan's wife from WoFS looks a lot like the wife from Goodfellas, and she even pulls the same "do you love her?" line when she expects him of cheating on her. Just a couple of my observations :p

Hey the issues which you have mentioned like continuity issue and dialogues out of sync, weird sound mixing, Scorsese said that he left it like that so that people will understand these characters are giving voice over from their memories and majority of the time they were high.

That's why that crawling in stairs had different numbers of stairs in different cuts.

I was wondering when you was going to review this move YMS. I have to agree that even tho it's long as hell there is so much going on that you won't even notice it. I think that the reason there was no backround noise in the Matthew Mcconaughey scene is because that is the scene that pretty much develops Leonardo Dicaprio's character into the wolf. I could be wrong but who cares. Still one of the best films last year besides 12 years a slave if you ask me.

Great review, but the stairs changing is not debatable at all. It's 100% intentional. The first shot where they show the number of stairs being more than there actually are, is from Jordan's direct point of view as he is completely high. Then when you see the actual number of stairs, it's from a wide shot, where we are more separated from his character, showing the reality of the situation. I don't know how it could have been made even more clear that the changing stairs where intentional.

Love your channel YMS but having seen this film close to a half a dozen times I can say with absolute certainty that the changing staircase was completely intentional due to Jordan being on a ridiculous amount of drugs that he's on. The editing is seen early in the scene when the drugs first take effect and Jordan falls to the ground and the camera follows him with the screen getting foggy meant to signify Jordans altered state. Great video though as always

Just came out of this film, and something he doesn't mention is how fucking funny it is: it could easily be categorized as a comedy. The whole theatre was in stitches from beginning to end, and although the tone was dark in some places, and incredibly lewd, it was a very good easy comedy.

I tend to disagree. Not that this was bad movie(because it was entertaining for sure) but because it seemed like I had already seen it before. This movie resembles Scorsese's other works(Casino/Goodfellas) so much that I even think that he might even have reused the storyboard from on them. Also when I read the book there was a lot more details to their crimes, which in my opinion would have given the movie a more serious tone as a critic of the financial system and industry as a whole. Instead the movie shows more like a remake/combination of his two previous movie only with stockbrokers instead of gangster. I wouldn't rate that high because it is not original but the acting and directing would still put it above average.

Yup...
There are many Scorsese films that just do terrible with the sound editing in general, and sound editing during transitions of scenes...you can't really tell that you've already went from one scene to the other, be it reaching out for a gap of Days even.
Examples: Gangs of Newyork, Wolf of wallstreet, the Departed.

Scorsese's movies have always had major continuity errors. His editor Thelma Schoonmaker has stated in interviews that Marty doesn't really care for them and only cares about the overall tone of the scene.

When it comes to the staircase thing, it's supposed to be intentional. It would totally make sense that, while intoxicated, you think stairs are farther down than expected. Also considering he thought he had a smooth ride in his car but in reality crashed it, the staircase scene is consistent.

A bit late to this I know, but I believe many of the editing "mistakes"
were intentional. Scorsese has spoken many times about how he resists the Hollywood style of editing where everything matches and flows perfectly. He favors (depending on the movie) a rougher style where the rhythm of the scene entirely dictates the cut, not if the shot matches or the sound syncs up. His justification being that that the characters in the film wouldn't care about such details, so why should he? I mean I can't argue against you if it took you out of the movie, but at least it was on purpose.

So here's the thing. I was looking through movies to watch with a friend and this movie came up, and I said it was perfect to watch since I didn't think anything else looked good besides Anchorman 2 since he had already seen it.
But my friend refused, and said he will never see this movie in theater.
I asked him why.
He said that the man the movie is based on, Jordan Belfort, is getting royalties for viewings. If you have seen the movie, you can tell that the guy is kind of a dick.
My friend's dad works with stock and knows of Belfort, and he knows that Belfort screwed a lot off good people over. So he doesn't deserve to be in this spotlight, and CERTAINLY doesn't deserve your money.
The daughter of Belfort has actually asked people not to see the movie.
It really doesn't matter to me how good or bad the movie is, I just don't want my money ending up in the pockets of a crooked man.

Ever been so pissed that you can't even walk up a set of stairs? That it seems like it might take forever to climb? Sort of the idea there, except for him, the 4 steps turns into 20, indicating the difficulty he would have getting down them, as he is so fucking drugged up.

I'm glad Leo didn't win best actor for this because he wasn't the best actor. This is year is now supposed to be "his year" with The Revenant but Tom Hardy showed him up in his own movie. Leo is a consistently good actor who is in consistently really good movies. I have never seen him play a character that wasn't just Leo in any other movie.
