Stand By Me
Quicksilver Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we see
No, I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me, so
Oh, stand by me
Oh stand, stand by me, stand by me
If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Ot the mountain
Should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry
No, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me, and
(Repeat * 2 times)
Whenever you're in trouble
Won't you stand by me, oh stand by me
The song "Stand By Me" by Quicksilver is a love song with a touching sentiment that celebrates the importance of companionship in times of adversity. The lyrics describe the night time and possibly the feeling of loneliness that can accompany it. The words "When the night has come and the land is dark, and the moon is the only light we see" set the scene for the song, as it suggests a time of vulnerability, and quickly follows with a declaration of the singer's strength in the face of darkness. The point of the song is not to ignore the troubles and challenges of life, but to acknowledge them without fear, knowing that the singer has someone special by their side that they can count on.
The song goes on to describe the sky tumbling and mountains crumbling to the sea, both unlikely events. However, they metaphorically represent the catastrophic moments in life that can lead to despair and hopelessness. In the face of these extremes, the singer professes that they will not cry or shed a tear, as long as their loved one stands by them. The chorus is then repeated several times, with a call to the loved one to "stand by me" whenever the singer is in trouble.
Overall, "Stand By Me" by Quicksilver is a simple yet powerful expression of companionship and support. It emphasizes the idea that even the strongest people can feel vulnerable and overwhelmed in the face of life's challenges, but having someone by your side can make all the difference. With its catchy melody and meaningful lyrics, the song has become a timeless classic that continues to inspire and touch listeners.

Years ago I got hooked on QMS when I first heard FRESH AIR
I can't say that I've heard this mellow one before. QMS is the quintessential psychedelic rock and roll band of San Francisco
And the B side ?
psych45s
Big Quicksilver fan here, John Cipollina is my favorite guitar slinger. I tried to upload the B-side for someone who requested it but the video is blocked in most countries: https://youtu.be/by2xh-1NYtQ ... it's a very unusual novelty track called "Bears," unlike anything Quicksilver ever recorded but still pretty cool.

@psych45s
FRESH AIR was QMS only tune to make the charts. That song showcased everything they were about. It led me to investigate their other material ( great stuff ) that never got any radio play.
John C. your favorite guitar slinger ?
YEAH ! that man knew his guitar backwards, forwards, upside down & inside out. A true talent,no doubt

@psych45s According to David Freiberg "Bears" was written by a folk singer named Roger Perkins. There are a couple other versions out there as well

It might be Gary Duncan’s voice, but I swear you can hear Dino singing in the background.

I also have been searching for several years for the bears song. I had it on a 33&1/3 in the seventies
