Water
Quiet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And I can't explain my thoughts, of realistic memories, that guided me through sanity

I was drowning at the bottom of the sea and when I finally rose my head above water
You were my first gasp of fresh air
The skies opened, a warm light shone through, and my world stopped in its tracks
When you worked your way into my lungs and let out your first breath, it wasn't to cry, but to sing

(I can't explain my thoughts )
Here I sit at the end of the oceans waves
(Of realistic memories)
The sandy shores are reminiscent of nevermore
Because every grain represents every pain that I've felt in this hollow shell that's been bored
(That guided me through sanity)
A lovers remorse, a course that I must walk along and scream upon until my voice grows coarse
(I can't explain my thoughts )
But of course, just like the grains of sand on this beach, the realization of my insignificance
And the significance of everything happening reminds me that I should feel no remorse
(Of realistic memories)
My head is being forced below water
(That guided me through sanity)
This harsh liquid's filling my body leaving me with the inability to breath
But in the end every inferno turns to ash
And in that ash lays my former self

I see you standing behind me in every mirror's reflection
But you're just a ghost of lovers past and darling
I still haven't gotten over how you've moved on so fast
Empty corridors bare that same silence you gave me
You said we moved at too quick a pace
But through every adversity we faced I would never let our love be disgraced

I've always had an addictive personality and maybe that's why I was so addicted to you
Because when our arms crossed and our hearts connected my body just asked for more
And darling you're leaving me so psychotic it's leading me to narcotics
But it's no use, because no drug will get me as high as I felt with you

I can't explain my thoughts, of realistic memories, that guided me through sanity, but now you're gone
Every day I bloom, awakened and in a different bed, ever since you left

I still think about you every night
Even when at the end of the day all we would do is fight
You've left me feeling hopeless and homeless
And through all of this stress and distress that you've caused me
I still find a way to imagine you alongside me
It's taken quite a bit of time for me to heal
Because all of this still doesn't feel real
And darling you've moved on so fast that it seems you truly knew this would never last
I have your voice embedded in my skull with faint whispers traveling through my bones

I've been left feeling so lost
You taught me what it sounds like when water sang fire

Last day I bloomed, awakened and I'm different
I can't explain my thoughts, of realistic memories, that guided me through sanity, and now you're gone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Quiet's Water are a portrayal of a person's struggle to reconcile their feelings after a breakup. The first verse uses an extended metaphor of being submerged in water to convey the feeling of helplessness and despair. The person finds refuge and a sense of purpose in their partner, who brings life and vitality to their existence. But after the relationship ends, they are left with memories and feelings that they cannot understand or articulate ("I can't explain my thoughts"). Despite the pain, the person tries to make sense of their emotions and experiences, recognizing their own insignificance in the grand scheme of things.

The second verse describes a sense of longing and nostalgia for the relationship that has ended. The person sees their partner's influence everywhere, even in their own reflection, but knows that they are only a memory now ("you're just a ghost of lovers past"). The person acknowledges their own flaws and addiction, but also expresses a sense of loss that cannot be substituted by any substance. In the final verse, the person reflects on their growth since the breakup, recognizing that they have become a different person. They still think about their ex-partner every night, but they also realize that the relationship was not meant to be, and that they must move on.

Overall, Water is a thoughtful and introspective song that touches upon themes of love, loss, and self-discovery. Through the use of vivid metaphors and poetic language, the lyrics convey a range of emotions that many can relate to.

This song is like many in Undertale.
It can make people feel two ways.
One is peaceful to the point one could fall asleep.
The other lonely and echoing. As though the song you are hearing was played a long time ago, and wasn't even ment to be heard.
Most either feel one or the other, and no being depressed doesn't mean you will grow sad because of this song.
It seems to be purely because of chase.
But no matter when or where songs like these make me feel secluded yet calm.
What I always feel is a mix of an aching void and a wave of calm.
It reminds me of death. In the way it takes the ones you love but yet it must to pave the way for a brighter future. It leaves loneliness, aching, unbearingly painful. But yet death is the one thing that is assured in this world. One could die before they take there first breath. So not even that is guaranteed. You could die today, tomorow, next week, in a year, 10 years. You don't know when, or where, but death is certain. For those of you who are listening to this song and are becoming lonely, is it because you miss the ones you have lost?
Or is that rude to ask...

@LoztiaOnAT

*You sit on the pale, damp grass.
*The calming theme of WATERFALL makes you feel at ease.
*Dew dripping from the stalactites hits you, but it doesn't hurt.
*You take a moment to remember all your previous runs.
*By far, they've made you a horrible person...but this time, it's different.
*As you look in the direction of where Undyne's house is, you recall her words.

If you think I'm going to give up on hope...you're WRONG!

*They were everything to you...the way she looked at you, the way she made you feel horrible...
*It wasn't worth dwelling on.
*That run is over, and everyone is alive.
*Including Undyne.
*Her and Alphys are dating now.
*In fact, you have seen them kiss, too.
*As you hear familiar voices heading towards you, you smile gently.

HUMAN! WHY ARE YOU HERE ALONE? NEVER FEAR, THE GREAT PAPYRUS IS HERE!
Hey, kiddo. What ya doing?
HEY, PUNK! We've been looking everywhere for you!
Y-you had us worried s-s-sick! W-why don't you have a j-jacket on?!

*You smile.
*You wave, but you don't talk.
*You're so lucky to have your friends with you...
*You're so lucky to have them alive.

@ikergonzalez4222

Honestly since I found out about Undertale back at 2016 I was deeply attached to it emotinally.
I really cannot hear the calm Undertale themes whitout actually feel depressed or sad. Since nostalgia hits very hard, and nostalgia is of the few things thay can make me cry.
Back at 2016 It was so hard to a 11 year old boy as I was.
The bullying, being pushed aside by my brother and told to be a burden, a joke to my sister, a dumb crybaby for my father, who would allways scream at me.
And my mother being the only support I had, aside of the videogames I would run to so I could isolate from the world.
My mother tho wouldnt take me very seriously, but her hugs were very comforting.
Games were really my rest, they were my home.
And a game like Undertale, really made me feel welcomed. With such a charming characters.
I maybe didnt play the game further from the pacifist run, since even tho I knew it was a game, I didnt want to do the genocide for respect to the characters.
Tho it felt like more than a game to me.
And the fandom. Well it was way more welcoming before, but I still find sometimes kind members to talk to.
Whenever I hear this calm themes it makes me sad. Not only because of the nostalgia, but because I remember it was what I called home back then, and it feels like wanting to go back somehow just to feel that first great feeling it gave me.
Honestly. Maybe some of the messages of the game didnt really stay long with me. Atleast some on specific. But characters such as Papyrus were mentors for me, as back then there was nobody I could proudly look up to. So even if it was fantasy, his philosophy really touched me.
I might definitley not be a forgiving person. But I do definitley like helping others, and ofcourse, I love pasta.
Those who say videogames are a waste of time should think twice, since it really can mean more than they can even imagine.
And it's also thanks to Undertale that I'm going to learn programming and stuff so (I hope) I can make a game that can make others feel in home too.
Give what I needed and give the feeling this game gave me.

@Whosgenderisthis

Poem I wrote while listening to this:

The waterfall, the waterfall,
so peaceful and calm,
the waterfall? the waterfall,
the day has already gone,

the waterfall, the waterfall,
the stars in the sky,
the waterfall? the waterfall,
the days are passing by,

the waterfall! the waterfall!
where we can play!
The waterfall! the waterfall!
I had a good day!

The waterfall, my waterfall,
my love and my home,
my waterfall, my waterfall,
come back home.

@leaf4111

I think what makes Undertale so special is the unforgettable characters and the music . The characters are built in such a way that they are such a comfort person for you or resemble you so much, you grow emotionally attached to them.
For example, I'll name characters and reasons why they may be comforting for players:

Toriel : Toriel is an mother figure. Most mother figures are respected on the internet and may make you feel safe. Toriel is made in such a way she tries to keep you safe and reffers you as: 'my child'. Toriel is a great mother and is very overprotective just because of her fear of losing another child.

Toriel may also be an comfort character for the pure reason of trauma. Maybe the player didn't have a good childhood or didn't have a mother at all. Having a great, Caring mother figure in your life definetly changes you for the better.

Sans : Sans is seen as the comic. The skeleton who always smiles and makes puns. His comic personality makes us, the player, feel rather happy near Sans. And what makes most players feel the most connected is at the genocide route, Sans takes vengeance for his brother. Why? Because he loved him. Many people could relate to this as many would take a bullet for a relative.

The music is constructed in such a way that whenever you go back and listen you remember the fun times you had playing the game and actually miss the characters. This tactic is used in many videogames. Such as Minecraft for example. Nostalgia is everywhere and it's quite impossible to escape it. But its a beautiful yet sad feeling.

@-TheDefinitionOfGayPanic.-

Who is listening during quarantine ....?

Just to get our minds off everything that's going on in the world...

And fall into the great dark unknown we call sleep ...

Or just to clear the mind ...

Whichever ...

Just know we are all suffering with you and everything is going to be okay ...

I know we will be okay you just gave to stay ...

Determined........

@tigerelly6778

Adding to this:

* You trip into the water while looking at the fake stars
* You panic
* You try to swim, but realize you don’t know how
* As you fall deeper into the waves, you can’t breathe
* You feel the comfort in the cold embrace
* You feel relaxed as you float downward
* This is a peaceful end, isn’t it?
* But you don’t want to die
* You are DETERMINED to not die here
* The waves call to you…
* But your DETERMINATION is stronger

@DisplayFlorr

this really makes you think about all the characters and what they have went thru.
like sans, hes been thru alot.
having to deal with the genocides.
the resets.

spamton, who is trapped forever as a puppet.
who just wanted to be big.
who just wanted freedom.

jevil, who is trapped in a prison
no one to talk to.
no one to play with.

toriel, who worries about all the humans that have fell.
worried that they may die.

asgore, who regrets everything hes done.
all the humans that hes killed.
he just wanted to be free.

kris, who is trapped being controlled by the soul.
who cant be free no matter how hard they try.

in the end, they all have something that they want.
or something that they worry about.
or something that they regret.
or something that they want to get out of.

and theres me, writing this.
im just a goofy little person but, writing this makes me feel something.
if your reading this, have a wonderful day or night.
just remember,

someone out there..
really cares about you.
really loves you.
they worry for you.
but no matter what,
there will always be a person like that.

*Here you are, sitting here.
*The grass, it's cool and damp. So soft.
*The water, it runs in the back, hitting the river, soothing you.
*The echo flowers, sitting there. Nothing else but those light up the dark, lonely chasm.
*You sit there and find that theres nobody here.
*Everyone is asleep but you.
*You are filled with determination.
