Comienza la Vida Nueva
Quilapayún Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Callados eran los rostros
del tiempo que se vivió
oscuras eran las manos
en noches de explotación
los puños duros del pueblo
derriban sombra y silencio
y hay voces que nos remecen
llamándonos a cantar.

La noche ha muerto y ha sido
el pueblo quien la mató.
La estrella baila en los ojos
y niños juegan al sol.
Comienza la vida nueva
y es hora que construyamos
juntando las manos todas
ya nada nos detendrá.

Ven campanero a sumarte
de todos es la unidad
ven compañero y construye
hay mucho que trabajar.
No dejes de estar alerta
la noche no hay que olvidar,

has derrotado a las sombras
ya nada nos detendrá.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Quilapayún's song Comienza la Vida Nueva describe the quiet and dark times of the past, filled with exploitation and oppression. However, this silence and darkness is broken by the strong voices of the people who unite to fight against injustice. The image of "puños duros del pueblo" (the people's hard fists) breaking through the "sombra y silencio" (shadow and silence) reflects the power of the collective, and their ability to overcome even the most challenging circumstances. The call to sing is a call to continue the struggle, to raise their voices against oppression, and to never forget the hard-fought victories that they have already achieved.

The second stanza describes the dawn of a new era, where the night has been defeated by the strength and unity of the people. Children play in the sunlight and the starry gaze of their elders, who have witnessed the injustice and darkness of the past. It's a time for rebuilding, where everyone is called to join hands to create a better future. The song communicates a spirit of hope, and a belief in the collective power of people to shape their own destiny. The "campanero" (bell ringer) is called upon to join the chorus of voices, and is urged to remain vigilant and not forget the past. The song thus becomes a rallying cry for the faithful who continue to fight for change, to ensure that nothing will ever stand in the way of progress.
