The song La Batea by Quilapayún is a satirical commentary on the corrupt and decadent society of Chile during the 1970s. The batea mentioned in the song refers to a wooden bowl traditionally used for washing gold in streams, but here it is a metaphor for the country and its people. The first verse describes how the batea moves and churns, representing the turbulent and chaotic nature of Chilean society.
The following verses introduce four characters, referred to as "pinganillas," meaning scoundrels or good-for-nothings. Merino, Mendoza, Augusto and Gustavo are all members of the same group or "combo," but each is singled out for their particular faults. Merino is described as a cowardly troublemaker, Mendoza as overly aggressive, Augusto as a fearful snitch and Gustavo as a brainless follower.
Through the lyrics, the song exposes the hypocrisy and greed prevalent in Chilean politics and society at that time. The chorus "este circo de gorilas nunca más" (this circus of gorillas no more) calls for an end to the corrupt system and a hope for a more just and fair society.
