Las Obreras
Quilapayún Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

El día que yo me muera
(Como las estrellas)
Se acabará la alegría
(Qué alegres son las obreras)
(Bailemos con ellas)

De luto estarán las pompas
(Como las estrellas)
Cerradas las pulperías
(Qué alegres son las obreras)
(Bailemos con ellas)

Como las estrellas
Hermosas y bellas
(Qué alegres son las obreras)
(Bailemos con ellas)

Canten señores cantores
(Como las estrellas)
De qué me andaí esperando
(Qué alegres son las obreras)
(Bailemos con ellas)

Si apenas soy de apariencia
(Como las estrellas)
Sombriaje andaí caminando
(Qué alegres son las obreras)
(Bailemos con ellas)

Como las estrellas
Hermosas y bellas
(Qué alegres son las obreras)
(Bailemos con ellas)

Si supiera que cantando
(Como las estrellas)
Algún alivio tuviera
Qué alegres son las obreras
Bailemos con ellas

De la noche a la mañana
(Como las estrellas)
Cantando me amaneciera
(Qué alegres son las obreras)
(Bailemos con ellas)

Como las estrellas
Hermosas y bellas

(Qué alegres son las obreras)
(Bailemos con ellas)

Overall Meaning

The song Las Obreras by Quilapayún is a poignant piece that speaks about the lives of working-class women in Chile. It starts with the lyric, "The day that I die, joy will end". The singer is talking about how their death will lead to sorrow, and how the happiness of the working-class women- obreras, will be no more. The next few lines are somewhat of a celebration of life. The singer talks about how beautiful the stars are and how similarly beautiful are the working women. They invite the listeners to dance with these women and share their joy.

The song then takes a sharp turn to express the harsh realities of life for the obreras. The funeral dirge melody, "De luto estarán las pompas, cerradas las pulperías" (The pompas will be in mourning, the small stores closed), depicts the struggle of the working-class women, who rely on these small shops to survive. We then see the obreras excluded - "Sing, Sir Singers, what are you waiting for?" and the singer, who feels invisible to the world despite being as present and beautiful as the stars - "If I only look like a shadow, despite my presence.” The song ends on a hopeful note, where the singer talks about how singing for and dancing with the obreras brings some relief to their struggles.
