Everything Must Change
Quincy Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything must change
Nothing stays the same
Everyone must change
No one stays the same

The young become the old
And mysteries do unfold
Cause that's the way of time
Nothing and no one goes unchanged

There are not many things in life
You can be sure of
Except rain comes from the clouds
Sun lights up the sky
And hummingbirds do fly

Winter turns to spring
A wounded heart will heal
But never much too soon
Yes everything must change

The young become the old
And mysteries do unfold
Cause that's the way of time
Nothing and no one goes unchanged

There are not many things in life
You can be sure of
Except rain comes from the clouds
Sun lights up the sky
And butterflies do fly

Rain comes from the clouds
Sun lights up the sky
And music

And music
Makes me cry

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Everything Must Change by Quincy Jones is a reflection on the transitory nature of life. The opening lines of the song “Everything must change, nothing stays the same, everyone must change, no one stays the same” sets the tone for the theme of the song. Quincy is stating that change is inevitable, and it is a natural part of life that affects everyone. He goes further to explain that young people become old, and over time, mysteries are unveiled. He continues that one can be sure of only a few things in life, such as rain coming from clouds, the sun lighting up the sky, and hummingbirds flying.

The song's essence represents the basic principles of Buddhism, which holds that change is constant and is an inherent reality of life. Quincy exemplifies this by highlighting that a wounded heart will heal in time, and winter will eventually turn to spring. The song's overall mood is reflective and contemplative, a stark contrast to a lot of his upbeat and funky tracks. The lyrics encourage reflection on the fragility of life and the value of embracing change. Quincy uses music's power to provoke emotions by drawing on personal and universal experiences like love, loss, and the intricate workings of nature.

My dear Mother Mrs. Emma died at the age of 91 years old on July 7, 2020. Oh how I miss her so. I was with her from the womb to the grave. Oh how I miss my Mama. Everything Must Change. Pray my continued strength in the LORD. I remember Mama with tears of love ......

I so understand your aching heart. I lost both parents, back to back. It has gotten easier. I don't cry anymore because l was so blessed to have great parents for so long. So now l can just smile as they cross my heart and mind daily. I pray it gets a little easier for you as time passes. Take care, Mr. Johnson.

I first heard this song as a young 22 year old woman. It still moves me at age 69. Yes, the young do become the old. Many things do change. But, I have learned this one infallible truth. God is the same, yesterday, today and forever. He kept me at age 22 when I denied Him. And, He is still keeping me after I surrendered to His love.

AMEN SIS, AMEN. I'M STILL LISTENING, AT AGE 59.
