Misty
Quincy Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look at me,
I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree
And I feel like I'm clinging to a cloud
I can't understand,
I get misty just holding your hand.

Walk my way,
And a thousand violins begin to play
Or it might be the sound of your hello
That music I hear,
I get misty the moment you're near

You can say that you're leading me on
But it's just what I want you to do
Don't you notice how hopelessly I'm lost
That's why I'm following you.

On my own,
Would I wander through this wonderland alone
Never knowing my right foot from my left,

My hat from my glove,
I'm too misty, and too much in love.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Quincy Jones's song Misty depict a person who is enamored with another individual to the point where they feel helpless and lost when they are not around. The first verse describes the singer's feeling of helplessness, comparing themselves to a kitten stuck up in a tree and clinging to a cloud. The second verse paints a picture of the transformative power that the object of the singer's affection seems to hold over them, with a thousand violins playing at the mere sight of them. The singer is so overwhelmed by their emotions that they cannot help but get misty when they are near the other person. The chorus expresses the singer's desire to be with the other individual and follow them, despite the potential for them to be leading them on.

One interesting aspect of the song is that it was originally written by pianist Erroll Garner as an instrumental piece in 1954. Johnny Burke later wrote the lyrics to the melody, and it became a popular jazz standard. The song has been covered by numerous artists in various genres, including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Stevens, and even rock band The Ventures. It has also been featured in several films and TV shows, such as Play Misty for Me and Mad Men.

Another interesting aspect of the song is the use of the word "misty" to describe the singer's emotional state. The word can be interpreted as referring to a foggy or cloudy state of mind, which is a common metaphor for being unclear or uncertain about something. However, it can also be interpreted as referring to tears or a misty-eyed state of being emotional, which is likely what the song is referring to in this case.

You are right. I'm German...

Here is the original Sarah Vaughan "Misty" recording from 1959 which surprised me when I was age 14.

So I think it is the best love song ever!

Think about the first lines:

"Look at me,
I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree
And I feel like I'm clinging to a cloud
I can't understand,
I get misty just holding your hand."

This recording is so fabulous that when Johnny Mathis heard it he fell in love with it and later recorded it and it became his signature song.  Quincy Jones and his orchestra are among the best in the world.  My hat is off for all involved in allowing us to hear and experience this wonderful song and unique sound of Sarah Vaughan's singing abilities and talent.  Thank you !!!
