Stardust
Quincy Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by.

Sometimes I wonder, how I spend
The lonely nights
Dreaming of a song
The melody
Haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation is in the stardust of a song

Besides the garden wall, when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale
Tells his fairytale
Of paradise, where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain

My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain.

Overall Meaning

The song Stardust by Quincy Jones is a melancholic composition about lost love and the memories that it leaves behind. The opening lines set the mood for the rest of the piece as the singer talks about the purple dusk of twilight time that steals across the meadows of his heart. The imagery used here is that of a heart that is slowly succumbing to the darkness of the night, which is a metaphor for the pain that he feels due to the absence of his loved one. The little stars that climb high up in the sky remind him of the distance between them and how they are always apart. The singer is left with nothing but a song that will not die, which is a symbol of the memories he has of their love that he cannot escape from.

The singer then wonders how he spends his lonely nights, dreaming of a song that haunts his reverie. The melody of the song inspires him, making him feel like he is once again with his loved one when their love was new and each kiss was an inspiration. But that was long ago, and now his consolation is in the stardust of a song. The last stanza is a wistful description of a paradise where roses grew, and the nightingale told fairy tales. The singer acknowledges that he dreams in vain because he cannot have his loved one back, but the memory of their love's refrain will remain in his heart forever.

I first heard this, 36 years ago, and it still blows me away: he makes the alto saxophone sound so easy!

I heard Benny Carter play Stardust in Grant Park one beautiful moon lite night on the shore of lake Michigan, at the ,Chicago Jazz festival . l felt his version was great, however after listen to Sonny and Quincy interpretation I must say as much as I enjoyed Benny, Sonny rendition just blows me away, the melodic tone is magnificent, I am not taking anything from Benny Carter who is a Master in his own rite, I understand Benny was one of the alto players who had influence on Sonny.God Bless the both of these Master's, may they rest in peace!!!🎶🎷

Check out Bird playing this with Strings at Rockland Palace. The sound quality is only fair, but good as Stitt is, Bird is transcendant.
