Yo mantengo una riqueza,
Una prenda de belleza
Con un brillo natural.
Yo valgo màs que el coral,
Que el diamante y que el rubi,
Yo no me cambio por ti
Y en regiones extranjeras
Todos me aprecian a mi.
Dicen que hubo, no hubo nada,
Me voy pa'l chopo de madrugada,
De madrugada me voy pa'l chopo
Por que el guayabo me vuelve loco,
Usted, usted, usted lo mandó a poner,
Que si la pone la paga
Y si no la pone también
Usted, usted, usted lo mandó a poner,
Que si la pone la paga
Y si no la pone también
La pata'e cabra se queja
Y también el caracol
Pa' nosotros no hay dolor,
Esto lo dice la almeja,
También la papa a la reina
Cuenta su historia pasada.
Qué vida màs desgraciada
Echarnos Dios en el mundo,
En estos mares profundos
Donde no valemos nada.
Mis tres hermanos queridos
Se los llevó la corriente
Dice un niño tristemente,
Que caso tan dolorido.
Marchamos todos unidos
A bañarnos sin temor,
Vino el rio con su furor
Se los llevó muy ligero
Cuando desaparecieron,
Cual no sería mi dolor.
The first stanza of the song "Gaita Margariteña" by Quinteto Contrapunto speaks of the pride of the shell in the sea. The shell feels that it possesses a natural beauty and brightness that makes it more valuable than even coral, diamonds or rubies. The shell is so confident in its worth that it does not want to be traded for anything or anyone. Its value is recognized not just locally, but in foreign regions as well. The second stanza speaks of the singer's intention to leave early in the morning to go to "el chopo". He does this because he has been driven mad by the "guayabo", which is a tree from the Caribbean that bears a fruit with a very delicate and sweet smell, and whose leaves are used to create a tea that is meant to alleviate hangovers. In this stanza, the singer laments, somewhat sarcastically, the fact that someone has forced him to go to "el chopo" early in the morning. He says that if he ends up going, he will be paid for it, and if he doesn't go, he will still be paid. The final stanza refers to the sorrowful past of the singer, where he talks about how God has placed him in a life where he feels he is worthless. He then mentions the tragic loss of his three brothers, who were swept away by a current, leaving him in pain and deep sadness.
One interesting fact about this song is that it is a traditional Venezuelan song and is one of the most recognized and beloved gaitas of all time. The gaita is a type of music that is native to Venezuela and is played during Christmas time. "Gaita Margariteña" was written by Ricardo Aguirre, who is often considered the "father of the gaita" for his contribution to the genre. He was born in the Venezuelan island of Margarita and was deeply influenced by the music of his region. The song has been covered by many renowned Venezuelan singers and has become a staple of Venezuelan holiday music. Moreover, "Gaita Margariteña" is a poetic representation of Venezuelan culture and traditions.
Another interesting fact about "Gaita Margariteña" is that it portrays the deep pain and struggle of the Venezuelan people. The song's lyrics express this pain and anguish, telling a story of loss and misery that is relatable to many Venezuelans. Additionally, the song speaks of the beauty of the sea and its creatures, showcasing the love and admiration that Venezuelans have for their natural surroundings.
Lastly, there is a unique version of this song that features an arrangement which includes an 'arpa llanera' (Venezuelan harp) and a 'cuatro' (a four-string guitar). This style of gaita is known as "Gaita Oriental" and is often played in eastern Venezuela.

I am worth more than coral,
Que el diamante y que el rubi,
More than diamonds and rubies,
Yo no me cambio por ti
I wouldn't trade myself for you
Pues yo valgo donde quiera,
Since I am valuable anywhere,

Todos me aprecian a mi.
Everyone appreciates me.
Dicen que hubo, no hubó nada,
They say that there was nothing,
Me voy pa'l chopo de madrugada,
I'm going to the poplar tree at dawn,
De madrugada me voy pa'l chopo
At dawn, I'm going to the poplar tree
Por que el guayabo me vuelve loco,
Because the guava drives me crazy,
Usted, usted, usted lo mandó a poner,
You, you, you sent it to be done,
Que si la pone la paga

And also the snail,
Pa' nosotros no hay dolor,
For us there is no pain,

My three beloved brothers
Se los llevó la corriente
The current took them away,
Dice un niño tristemente,
A sad child says,
Que caso tan dolorido.
What a painful situation.
Marchamos todos unidos
We all march together
A bañarnos sin temor,
To bathe without fear,
Vino el rio con su furor
The river came with its fury
Se los llevó muy ligero
And took them away very quickly
Cuando desaparecieron,
When they disappeared,
Cual no sería mi dolor.
What must have been my pain.
