Lilah
RÜFÜS Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can see the light in the window
Faded Jag is parked in the drive
As we left it, love was the question
Not just a good time

She's the type who begs to go slowly
Leads me on in the sneakiest ways
But somehow she'd rather be lonely
Love's a big game

Lilah
Cover your tracks
Like a liar
Knowing inside you're on fire
What's gonna happen to you?

CHORUS:
Some say holdin' on gets in the way
Some say better not learn how to stay
Can't you listen to what your heart's trying to say?
Lilah

Attitude is making the rounds now
Blondie tells her just what to wear
Thinks she's cool, she's running the town now
But she's nowhere

Blame it on the heart of the moment
Does she really know what she needs?
One on one is her main opponent
When will she see?

Lilah
Tell me, will love ever find her?
Dreams are still running behind her
What's gonna happen to you?

CHORUS

All the lovers that call you friend
Think they can stay until the end
But I'll be there dancin' all through the night
And they'll be gone before the light
Oh baby, baby just make your move
'Cause if you love you just can't lose

Oh baby when will you see
That this is the way for you and me?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rufus's song Lilah portray a young woman who is navigating the complexities of love and relationships. The song opens with a scene of Lilah's house, where her Jaguar is parked in the driveway and the light can be seen through the window. The singer of the song reflects on their past relationship with Lilah and remembers that they were in love and seeking a serious commitment rather than just a fling.

However, Lilah is portrayed as someone who prefers taking things slowly and keeping the singer on the chase. Despite her pleas for a slow-burn romance, Lilah remains a lonely person, caught up in a game of love that she can't seem to win. The chorus of the song questions whether it's better to hold on or let go of a relationship, emphasizing the importance of listening to your heart.

The second verse introduces Blondie, who seems to be Lilah's friend advising her on how to dress and act. Although Lilah may believe that she's cool and in control, the singer suggests that she's actually going nowhere. The lyrics suggest that Lilah is lost and searching for love but unsure of what she really wants.

Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on love and relationships that emphasize the importance of honesty and openness to finding true love. The lyrics suggest that Lilah, like many young people, may be distracted by superficial desires and societal pressures rather than focusing on what truly matters in finding love.

Ok,this song is pretty damn good! Chaka Khan and Rufus were an awesome band!

@FIGHTSEEN

Has the polished "LA Studio Sound" from the late 70's / early 80's.Sounds like something could've been recorded by Earth Wind & FIre. (Same writer?) Interesting to hear Chaka in a supporting role.Pretty cool when a "B side" sound better than most of the stuff that's pumped in your ears these days.

@deniseg1100

I don't have that album, but I hear that on this song, it was actually Angela Winbush singing the hooks. They were fighting really bad by this time, and Chaka wasn't in the studio much for this ablum.
