Sinking Feeling
Róisín Murphy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You dive in, at the shallow end
You break your, neck and
You're never ever gonna get up again
The glass house, that you lived in
Is deep in the, quickening
Angel might call by
(Bring some peace to your mind for today is a new day)
Here in, my hand
Time is, just sand
Fine lines, of love and hate
There on your face
But I look at this way
In the next 7 days (In the next)
Might just change
How can I write
The story that
Went and wrote itself
Down in paperback
Called the fountain, of know thyself
Is a lonely book
Still upon the shelf
It'll be all smiles
And we'll rise and ride
On the waves, of a sinking feeling
(Bring some peace to your mind for today is a new day)
Happy people, don't give into
Happy people, don't give into
That sinking feeling
It'll be all smiles
And we'll rise and we'll sail
It'll be all smiles
And we'll rise and we'll sail on the waves
It'll be all smiles
And we'll rise and we'll sail on the waves
Of a sinking feeling
The lyrics to Róisín Murphy's song "Sinking Feeling" explore the concept of feeling trapped and helpless. The first verse describes the feeling of being stuck in quicksand, both physically and psychologically. The metaphorical glass house that the singer lived in is also sinking, representing a loss of control and stability. The line "Angel might call by, but fools they rush in" suggests that help may be available, but those who rush in without considering the consequences may do more harm than good. The repeating refrain of "Bring some peace to your mind for today is a new day" offers a glimmer of hope and a reminder to take things one day at a time.
The second verse shifts focus to the passing of time and the changes that it can bring. The singer observes the fine lines of love and hate on someone's face, but also notes that things can change quickly. The line "Might just change in the next 7 days" suggests that while things may seem hopeless now, there is always the possibility of a turnaround. The third verse takes a meta approach, with the singer commenting on the act of writing and how sometimes stories seem to write themselves. The metaphor of the book called "the fountain of know thyself" being lonely on the shelf suggests that even when we have the tools to help ourselves, it can still feel like an isolating struggle.
The chorus offers a glimmer of hope, with the repeated phrase "It'll be all smiles and we'll rise and sail on the waves of a sinking feeling." While the sinking feeling is still present, the idea of riding the waves implies resilience and the ability to keep moving forward despite adversity. The final repetition of "Happy people don't give in to that sinking feeling" reinforces the idea that while negative experiences are a part of life, we have the power to choose how we respond to them.
