That Beat
R.E.M. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(That beat, that beat, that beat)
Eastern calls from way out wherever
Away I go, anchored in that beat
Thirsting for us too, three's a no man, but

[Chorus]
Remember, call that beat
Remember, call that beat

Finger lead them up, crime to rape the beat
Thirsting for us too, three's a no man, but

[Chorus: x2]

Finger lead them up (up), crime to rape the beat
Thirsting for us too (too), three's a no man, but

[Chorus: x2]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to R.E.M.'s song "That Beat" are open to interpretation, but they seem to speak to a deep connection to rhythm and music. The repeated phrase "that beat" suggests that the singer is fixated on a particular rhythm, one that drives them to travel ("Eastern calls from way out wherever / Away I go") and gives them a sense of grounding ("Anchored in that beat"). The reference to "thirsting for us too" may refer to a longing for others who share this same connection to music, and suggests that this shared love is a rare and valuable thing ("three's a no man").

The second verse introduces the idea of "Finger[ing] lead them up, crime to rape the beat," which could be interpreted in different ways. It may refer to the act of playing instruments, or to a more metaphorical idea of manipulating and controlling the rhythm. Either way, it suggests that the singer is fully immersed in the music and sees it as something to be worshiped and protected. The repetition of the chorus drives home the idea that this connection with rhythm is something that is maintained and remembered over time.

Overall, the lyrics to "That Beat" are brief and cryptic, but they convey a sense of powerful emotion and a deep love for music. The repeated phrase "that beat" suggests that the rhythm at the heart of the song is something that is elemental and timeless, and the call to remember it implies that it is something that is easily forgotten or overlooked. The song leaves many questions unanswered, but it is a powerful tribute to the enduring power of music.

This is the old raw Rock n Roll band that REM began as. This was when I loved them the most. Before they blew up in the 90's and became a mega band. These were the days when they were still just trying to make a living at playing music. This is when they did their best work.

deweypug

Completely agree.

Jeff Brown-Hill

They did do some great work later on as well, but there was definitely something special about their first few records. "Murmur" is one of my favorite albums ever.

noisepuppet

I think this song felt more like their live shows than most of the material that made it onto Murmur.

Geoffrey Gentry

Yeah, a lot of the Murmur stuff feels a little bit sluggish compared to their live renditions.

watchinshadows

Should have been included on the album!
