Try Not to Breathe
R.E.M. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I will try not to breathe
I can hold my head still with my hands at my knees
These eyes are the eyes of the old, shiver and fold

I will try not to breathe
This decision is mine
I have lived a full life
And these are the eyes that I want you to remember, oh

I need something to fly over my grave again
I need something to breathe

I will try not to burden you
I can hold these inside
I will hold my breath
Until all these shivers subside
Just look in my eyes

I will try not to worry you
I have seen things that you will never see
Leave it to memory me
I shudder to breathe

I want you to remember, oh (you will never see)
I need something to fly (something to fly)
Over my grave again (you will never see)
I need something to breathe (something to breathe)
Baby, don't shiver now
Why do you shiver? (I will see things you will never see)
I need something to fly (something to fly)
Over my grave again (I will see things you will never see)
I need something to breathe, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh

I will try not to worry you
I have seen things that you will never see
Leave it to memory me
Don't dare me to breathe
I want you to remember oh (you will never see)
I need something to fly (something to fly)
Over my grave again (you will never see)
I need something to breathe (something to breathe)
Baby, don't shiver now
Why do you shiver now? (I will see things you will never see)
I need something to breathe (something to breathe)

(I have seen things you will never see)
I want you to remember

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to R.E.M.'s "Try Not to Breathe" speak to the idea of facing one's inevitable mortality and trying to come to terms with it. The singer expresses the desire to hold onto their memories and to be remembered, while also acknowledging the difficulties of facing death. They try not to burden those around them with their fears and worries, but they also recognize the need for something to carry them forward after they're gone.

The imagery of shivering and folding serves to underscore the vulnerability and fragility of the human body, while the repeated phrases "something to fly over my grave again" and "something to breathe" convey a sense of longing for something that transcends the physical world. The song's somber tone and mournful vocals further emphasize the weight of the lyrics and the emotions they represent.

Andy Kaufman and Rupert Pupkin are the KINGS of COMEDY...LOL

LOL I just realized that University was Purdue University...Neil Armstrong ..Man on the Moon..Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon, graduated from Purdue in 1955. Fourteen years later, Neil Armstrong completed his moonwalk and spoke his famous line:
"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
My Step kids and I grew up around the 'Man on the Moon' ..Life is surreal sometimes LOL...
Love you kids who grew up and got run around Heavilon Hall at Purdue University. They got a life size picture of Neil in Heavilon Hall. Everything in LIFE happen there for me guys your mom, yous, dogs, Man on the Moon with Jim Carey, Heisei, Pemberly Courts, Casey, Griffen, "G" the ROtweiler we always wanted, ASL will Forever Fade into My days of Listening to this song and 3 D Asteroids at my friends Art/Physics Townhouse.
I grew up on Jerry Lawler the Wrestler/Andy Kaufman made fan of on David Letterman. He is pure genius. He makes me think of Mr Pupkin from the King of Comedy. He indeed was thee KING cuz the punch is on the audience...Hit it..Turn on F Scott Fitzgerald on Cassette Andy. BLAST the Great Gatsby on Full Blast!
Remember KIDS when I showed you the Great Gasby by Andy Kaufman...We could not stop laughing...Old McDonald had a farm...lol
I will forever remember my step kids growing up in the back of the car, (cars are time machines to me lol)...We would watch Andy Kaufman read the Great Gatsby and Laugh so hard to mark time. REM and marking time..LOL Thank you REM;s for the memorable forever moments with kids...What is it all about with music..
"Here I COME to Save the DAY!!!"
I was in college playing a 3 d like Asteroids with this in the background on continuously..He was a physics PhD student and was brilliants/nuts all in the same time. He was dreaming of the the equation of the Universe in a dream. I always thought it was a universe of ZERo's and ONE;s. 1/0. To BE or NOT to BE. I like what my high school buddy said.."to be or WHAT?!@#
I hope someday when someone is floating in life and listens this song that they find the inspiration 'to goofing off ELVIS, HEY BABY".

I lost my own brother. Joseph Dennis Corns, born 6/15/1956, to suicide on 1/10/2002. May his memory, and the memory of your own brother, be a blessing and a revolution.

@jakegilbert7839

Many may disagree, but imho this is simply the finest, most beautiful, most impactful album of the 90s. It literally saved my life!

@GabrieleMaiellaro

My mom found an old CD and played this album in the car. R.E.M. has been an "instant crush" since then and the fact that this album made me listen to all their discography means a lot! Milestone of the 90s no doubt

@alexandrapacheco1473

It´s a masterpiece

@petehill8885
