The Outsiders
R.E.M. (Featuring Q-Tip) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You took me to the restaurant where we first met
You knocked a future shock crowbar upside my head
I got caught with the stop of the tick-tock, tick-tock clock
When you told me what you knew

Lost in the moment
The day that the music stopped
And I do remember you

Drawing patterns with a cork on the tablecloth
Promising volcanic change of plot
Where will this lead us, I'm scared of the storm
The outsiders are gathering, a new day is born

I tried to tell you I am not afraid
You looked up and saw it all across my face
So am I with you or am I against
I don't think it's that easy, we're lost in regret

Now I'm trying to remember
The feeling when the music stopped
When you told me what you knew

Lost in the moment
The day that the music stopped
And I do remember you

Drawing patterns with a cork on the tablecloth
Promising volcanic change of plot
Where does this leave us - I'm scared of the storm
The outsiders are gathering, a new day is born

Drawing patterns with a cork on the tablecloth
Promising volcanic change of plot
Where does this leave us - I'm scared of the storm
The outsiders are gathering, a new day is born

The outsiders are gathering, a new day is born
The outsiders are gathering

A man walks away when every muscle says to stay
How many yesterdays, they each weigh heavy
Who says what changes may come?
Who says what we call home?
I know you see right through me, my luminescence fades
The dusk provides an antidote, I am not afraid
I've been a million times in my mind
This is really just a technicality, frailty, reality

Uh, it's time to breathe, time to believe
Let it go and run towards the sea
They don't teach that, they don't know what you mean
They don't understand, they don't know what you mean
They don't get it, I want to scream
I want to breathe again, I want to dream
I want to float a quote from Martin Luther King
I am not afraid
I am not afraid
I am not afraid

I am not afraid
I am not afraid

I am not afraid
I am not afraid

Overall Meaning

The Outsiders is a song by American rock band R.E.M., featuring rapper Q-Tip. The song presents two different people who were once close but are now separated by their differences. The song overall deals with the concept of change, and how difficult it can be for people to accept change and overcome their fears. The lyrics "Lost in the moment, the day that the music stopped, and I do remember you" refer to a past moment of happiness shared between the two people, who are now uncertain about the future. The lines "Drawing patterns with a cork on the tablecloth, promising volcanic change of plot" suggest a sense of hopelessness and being stuck in a rut. The outsiders referred to in the song signify the people who are willing to confront change and deal with the storm that comes with it.

The song was written during the sessions for R.E.M.'s 14th studio album, Accelerate. The album marks the return of the band to its original sound, featuring more guitar-driven and fast-paced songs. The Outsiders also features rapper Q-Tip, who was asked by lead singer Michael Stipe to contribute to the song after a chance meeting in a New York City restaurant. The song was produced by Jacknife Lee, who also co-wrote the track. The chorus of the song features a sample from the 1973 track Hi-Jack by the jazz/funk band Barrabas.

@davidg2404

I remember hearing this song and my mom singing to it when I was a little boy and asking her to put it on again and again. Later I started playing the guitar and music became the most important thing in my life. I forgot about that song till today as I was waching the introduction speech for Nirvana in the Rock'n Roll Hall of fame by the singer of this band and remembered the name R.E.M. and searched for that song... You know that feeling listening to something that is a strong memory from your childhood?

@kazman_6899

To me, it's no more distant than yesterday. How time goes.

@annettebutler5223
