Thanks so much for doing this. I'm just getting started with filmmaking and the whole LUT thing feels super scammy but at the same time super smart from an efficiency standpoint. Shameless cheap (bastard) plug here: I would love to know why it's so difficult to emulate the color rendition of the BMPCC cameras (more specifically those reds). I realize there's a lot to this than matching color charts and running color space transforms; dem redz tho... Is this a physics problem (due to the sensor's dual gain architecture or some other phenomenon), (similar to why emulating Ektachrome is also a much more complex task)? Or am I totally overthinking this?

@Color Grading Central Thanks for responding! I always wondered why there weren't any discussions about matching BMPCC colors to other cameras. Logic would have you think it's doable; but my inner overthinker started thinking maybe the dual-gain architecture of the sensor had something to do with it. I think one thing where it starts getting dicey is the nature of microlenses' color response curves; which may make it hard to emulate a particular camera made for being more liberal with certain colors and less so with others. Meaning we can't make our green alien skin look like an olive-tanned model driving a red Ferrari because one sensor will yield better gradations in the tones. This is all theoretical and I hope that we're living in a world where I can make X look like Y. I love the BMPCC skin tones (especially the reds); but OMG those cameras do something wonky that doesn't play well with youtube nor motion capture. If we can get 90% of the way there with a LUT I'm game. We don't need accuracy, we just need passable. Have a good one!

Hi David! I had no idea there was some kind of issue emulating the color rendition of the Blackmagic cameras. With some effort, you can match pretty much any camera. It's never 100% accurate but close enough that the audience won't notice the small changes. Of course, that's assuming you are working with decent codecs and dynamic ranges. 🙂
