Walkin' Blues
R.L. Burnside Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Woke up this morning, feel 'round for my shoes
You know 'bout that babe, had them old walkin' blues
Woke up this morning, I feel 'round for my shoes

You know 'bout that babe
Lord, I had them old walkin' blues

Leavin' this morning, I had to go ride the blinds
I've been mistreated, don't mind dying
This morning, I had to go ride the blinds

I've been mistreated
Lord, I don't mind

People tell me walkin' blues ain't bad
Worst old feeling I most ever had
People tell me the old walkin' blues ain't bad

Well, it's the worst old feeling
Lord, I most ever had

Overall Meaning

In R.L. Burnside’s “Walkin’ Blues,” the singer wakes up feeling lost and searches for his shoes, only to realize that he has the “old walkin’ blues.” This is a common phrase used in blues music, referring to the feeling of restlessness and aimlessness that often comes with being on the move. Throughout the song, the singer reflects on his difficult life and experiences, including being mistreated by others. He expresses a willingness to face whatever comes his way, even if it means “riding the blinds” – a term used to describe sneaking onto a train without paying.

The repetitive nature of the lyrics and guitar riff in “Walkin’ Blues” create a sense of continuity and persistence, mirroring the feeling of travel and moving forward. The repetition of the phrase “lord, I had them old walkin’ blues” emphasizes the despair and exhaustion that comes with a life of constant movement. Although the song may seem melancholy, it also speaks to the resilience and strength of those who must keep moving forward despite hardships.

many of the songs on this set got released for the first time on this vinyl lp.but its pointlessly the same d/igital master as the inferior cd.labels sure dont respect musical history with digital only reissues,so i got the original arhoolie lp with burnside on 1 side & joe callicott on the other which is sadly blocked on utube.sacd maximizes cd analogue maximizes vinyl,s true sonic potential.people wanna hear the original recordings without compression & criminal multiple overdubs.all i hear is what a clueless greedy businessman thinks is best due to profit.the fact is no matter what they say the original releases are far sonically superior..ask yourself one question if digital tech was superior as labels state.why does every digital reissue have huge chunks of recording missing ??..

@SamuelBlues

Amen.

@Ebionarius

I can't say anything about overdubs and stuff like that. But why in the name of God would anyone want to listen to this gem of a song on a scratchy muffled vinyl recording, when you can get as crisp and as clean sounding kind of a sound like this?

@djbigleg3228

the vinyl ive got on yahoolie records is nearly fautless & sounds crisp.with a quality amp & speakers its sonically superior & reverberates with true warmth & impact its a great recording..
