Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me
R.R.Kirk & Al Hibbler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someone told someone and someone told you
But they wouldn't hurt you, not much
Since everyone spread the story
With his own little personal touch

Do nothin' till you hear from me
Pay no attention to what's said
Why people tear the seam of anyone's dream
Is over my head
Do nothin' till you hear from me
At least consider our romance
If you should take the word of others you've heard
I haven't a chance
True I've been seen with someone new
But does that mean that I'm untrue
When we're apart the words in my heart
Reveal how I feel about you
Some kiss may cloud my memory
And other arms may hold a thrill
But please do nothin' till you hear it from me
And you never will
Do nothin' till you hear from me

Do nothin' till you hear from me
Pay no attention to what's said
Why people tear the seam of anyone's dream
Is over my head
Do nothin' till you hear from me
At least consider our romance
If you should take the word of others you've heard
I haven't a chance
True I've been seen with someone new
But does that mean that I'm untrue
When we're apart the words in my heart
Reveal how I feel about you
Some kiss may cloud my memory
And other arms may hold a thrill

But please do nothin' till you hear it from me
And you never will

Overall Meaning

The song "Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me" by R.R. Kirk and Al Hibbler is a plea to a lover to not believe the rumors about infidelity until they hear the truth from the person themselves. The opening lines of the song suggest that the rumors about the singer's infidelity have been spread through a game of telephone, with each person adding their personal touch to the story. The singer urges their lover to not pay attention to the gossip and to wait until they hear the truth directly from them. They argue that people often try to tear down someone's dreams or relationships, and that it is all very confusing and overwhelming.

The chorus repeats the plea to wait until they hear from the singer directly before making any judgments based on rumors. The singer acknowledges that they have been seen with someone new, but argues that this does not necessarily mean that they are untrue to their current love. They claim that their heart belongs to their current love, and that any kisses or thrills experienced with someone else are ultimately meaningless. The song ends with the singer urging their lover to wait to hear the truth from them directly, and suggesting that they will never hear it from anyone else.

Overall, the song is a commentary on the nature of rumors and gossip, and the harm that they can cause in relationships. It is also a plea for honesty and communication in romantic relationships, and a request for partners to trust each other over the words of outsiders.

Rather than say I was born in the wrong time, I'll say that those old enough to experience this type of music were blessed 🙌

I wish that there was another camera to see the face of Duke looking up at Ella. Sunday nights in my childhood - The Ed Sullivan Show. Not just the Beatles, but great variety and amazing talent on display for free. You just had to watch a few commercials.
