Stolen Moments
R. Harlan Smith & Chris Nielsen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I LEFT THE HOUSE TO DO SOME WINDOW SHOPPING
WHEN I MET AN OLD SWEETHEART I USED TO KNOW
WHEN HE TOUCHED MY HAND A TREMBLING SHOOK MY BODY
AND I REMEMBERED HOW I USED TO LOVE HIM SO

WE PASSED AN HOUR WITH TALK AND SCOTCH AND WATER
AND SHE TOLD ME THAT SHE SHOULD BE LEAVING SOON
BUT WE WERE HUNGRY FOR SOME PRECIOUS STOLEN MOMENTS
NOW HERE WE ARE IN THIS MOTEL ROOM

CHORUS: PLEASE LET ME HOLD YOU FOR A MOMENT
AND PLEASE LET THIS MOMENT LAST FOREVER
LET ME KISS THE LIPS THAT ONCE TOLD ME THEY LOVED ME
AND THAT THEY WOULD BE MINE FOREVER

NOW I'M BACK AT HOME WITH PRECIOUS STOLEN MEMORIES
I KNOW I NEVER WILL FORGET THIS DAY
THE YEARS HAVE CHANGED OUT LIVES BUT NOT OUR FEELINGS
AND I'LL REMEMBER ALWAYS WHEN I HEARD HER SAY

CHORUS: PLEASE LET ME HOLD YOU FOR A MOMENT
AND PLEASE LET THIS MOMENT LAST FOREVER

LET ME KISS THE LIPS THAT ONCE TOLD ME THEY LOVED ME
AND THAT THEY WOULD BE MINE FOREVER

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to R. Harlan Smith and Chris Nielsen’s song ‘Stolen Moments’ revolve around the idea of meeting an old lover unexpectedly and reminiscing about the past while acknowledging the changes time has brought upon their lives. The song starts with the singer going out to window shop and bumping into an old sweetheart, causing her to feel a physical response when he touches her hand. The pair spend an hour together with some drinks, aware that they don’t have much time, but wanting to make the most of what little time they have. They end up in a motel room, indulging in their desires for some precious stolen moments.

The chorus repeats the plea to hold the person for a moment and let the moment last forever, to reminisce about the past, and to rekindle the love that once existed between them. The song ends with the singer back at home, filled with precious stolen memories, acknowledging that time has changed their lives but not their feelings. The singer remembers the lover’s plea to hold them for a moment and the lips that once whispered love, promising to always remember these moments.

The song is a bittersweet reflection on the past and the attempts to hold onto it while acknowledging the inevitability of change. It deals with themes of nostalgia, longing, and the fragility of relationships. It suggests that though time may pass and things may change, some moments remain evergreen.

Just heard this classic, haven't heard since 70's. Of course, had to add this to my favorites playlist. This duo does it like no one else. Awesome!

It's good to hear R Harlan and Chris Neilson again. It reminds me of years ago in Edmonton...

Richard Melvin Brown

Chris should have been a major star and Harlan had a great unique style. Brings back many happy memories from the 70's and 80's in Edmonton for this former band member Rick Brown.

Paul Mac

Back in the late 60's and early 70's my father Wayne Noble from NB made his way around the country and western circuit out west and played a bit with R H Smith and Jimmy Arther Ordge. Then he met and married my mom from NS and I came along in 72. I guess he made his choice and settled down but played music until the mid 80's. He passed in 2016 and left me his 1963 J45 which is on his Album "Just Plain Me"

Oh yeah, back 75-76 in Edmonton in Beverley  Crest hotel on 118th street. Man, what great years those were. R. Harlan always with a superb band members. Edmonton had some of western Canada's best bands. Great moments. mosrite60

I swear Chris Nielson could be the mother of Carolyn Dawn Johnson...the ressemblance is uncanny.
