I See You
R. Mullins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lord, You're leading me (echo)
With a cloud by day (echo)
And then in the night (echo)
The glow of a burning flame (echo)

[CHORUS:]
And everywhere I go, I see You (echo)
And everywhere I go, I see You (echo)
And You take my hand (echo)
And You wash it clean (echo)
I know the promised land (echo)
Is light years ahead of me (echo)

[CHORUS:] x2

Well, the eagle flies (echo)
And the rivers run (echo)
I look through the night (echo)
And I can see the rising sun (echo)

[CHORUS:]

And everywhere I go, I see You (echo)
And I see You, Lord, I see You
Well, the grass will die (echo)
And the flowers fall (echo)
But Your Word's alive (echo)
And it will be after all (echo)

[CHORUS:] x4

And everywhere I go, I see You
And everywhere I go, I see You

Overall Meaning

R. Mullins's song "I See You" is a song about the presence of God in one's life. The song starts with the singer acknowledging that God is leading him in his journey. He compares this to the cloud and fire that led the Israelites during their exodus from Egypt. The power of God's guidance is represented in this song in the imagery of the cloud and fire. The next verse speaks of the eagle and rivers, and seeing the rising sun, which is another metaphor for how God's power can be seen in the natural world. The singer sees God everywhere he goes, and this is both symbolic and actual.

The chorus then repeats the central idea that the singer sees God everywhere he goes. The idea of seeing God is emphasized by the repetition of the phrase "I see you" at the end of each chorus. The chorus then goes on to suggest that God can take one's hand and wash it clean, demonstrating the cleansing and purifying power of God's grace.

The last verse speaks of the ephemeral nature of life, and the fact that all things will pass away, but God's Word will remain, demonstrating the enduring power of God's presence in one's life. The song emphasizes that God's presence is not physical or tangible, but rather it is a spiritual presence that can be felt and seen in the world around us.

Wow, I love this video.
I often wonder about these children.
Where they are today, how their lives turned out.
I was born in New Mexico in 1955.
I have memories of scenes as these.
A young Navajo lady helped my mom with my two siblings and I. She had her own room but went home with her family on weekends.
She earned $25 a week.
I loved her dearly, her name was Dolly or that's what we called her. She was beautiful.
I love how Rich had such a heart for these precious people.
Grateful for the heart of his close friends and fans who share these deep insights into his ministry.
May God continue to enrich our lives through our love for God, Rich and the body of Christ everywhere.

Rich Mullins-used powerfully by the Master to pen and perform inspiring masterpieces. Praise God.

I remember him closing a concert I saw him in back in 1991 and he performed this song as the last song of the evening.  He got everyone in the crowd singing "Everywhere I go I see you" back and forth with one half echoing the other.  And one by one each member of the band walked off the stage, and then he left.  For two minutes the crowd sung this over and over again with one side continuing to echo the other side.  No body was even concerned if he was coming back on the stage, but we were enjoying the joy of the moment singing this.  And then after two minutes of echoing this back and forth Rich and the band came back on stage and closed out the concert.  That was one of the most incredible moments I have ever experienced in a concert in my life -- maybe the best....  It's definitely left an impression on me forever.

Was that at Bethel College in Indiana? They were an Amazing show. One of the highlights of my life

@TM O. In my case it was at a local church in San Jose, California.

Eventually, it was not the first time it happened, because I witness it happening at the concert I went to in Kansas. The crowd kept singing and the band came back on stage. What you saw on stage really was how Rich Mullins was off stage, caring, sweet personality, on fire for God. I know because I was grateful to see him a number of times on and off stage at events beyond the concerts he did. He genuinely cared about people everywhere he went and loved God.

Love this. Makes me tear up too. He is my all time favorite artist ever. I remember exactly where I was when I heard he died. He still lives on in his music and he left behind a wonderful selfless example of Christ.

Rich Mullins - one of the few christian artists of all time who has heard these words "well done, good and faithful servant"
Mullins and Keith Green before him did what Jesus would do, I have not seen many people in my lifetime who do.
Everywhere Mullins went, people saw Jesus, just as he saw Jesus everywhere he went.

I really think the world would be different today if Rich was still spreading his music among us.

Yeah, I miss Rich, too -- we sorely lack him for the way he made us so uncomfortable, challenged, and yet blessed all at the same time. I can't think of anyone else who does that in Christian music today.
