R. Mutt hails from the upper Midwest and has been turning out music since the late 1980's. First at the Marquette University and University of Wisconsin bars and house parties and later throughout the Midwest. Music has changed much since the early days when R. Mutt was primarily playing Stones, Dylan, Dead, Velvet Underground and Clash covers to solid mix of original songs pulled from their 4 self released albums showing influences as varied as Black Sabbath, James Brown, Wilco, The Velvet Underground, the Clash and the Beatles.
The original line up included Pat Brennen Mike Bellante, Ron Thornton, Jim Dier and Paul Leckie. Pat departed for California after college and John Gentile became lead singer until departing to start his own band, Ventriloquist Cat. Starting in 1991 vocals have been handled by a combination of Mike, Ron and Jim. Bellante, Dier, Leckie, and Thornton formed the core of the band up until Mikes departure in 2005.
From 1991 through 1997 the band completed three recordings:
1991's Steamin' Hot Coolie
1996's Earth to Guy
1997's Let it Pee (never formally released live EP)
2007 had Ron and Jim returning to the studio with friends of the band to complete Heptane. Heptane, sits next to alt country or americana bands as well as Southern Rock or good old fashioned Rock and Roll. Fans of Slobberbone, The Bottle Rockets, Two Cow Garage, and early Wilco should enjoy Heptane which also has some sounds that will be familiar to fans to The Band or even Cheap Trick. In 2010 the band added guitarist, Dan Power, formerly of the 90's Marquette band Blue Utah. 2011 saw the release of the album Leash on Life with the line up of Ron Thornton (vocals/guitar), Dan Power (vocals/guitar), Jim Dier (vocals/bass), and Paul Leckie (drums.)
Matt Schreier signed on as the band's drummer in 2011 to tour in support of Leash on Life and for six years the line up of Dier, Power, Schreier, Thornton experienced the bands greatest success to date with our first Summerfest shows and numerous midwest shows sharing the stage with bands such as Two Cow Garage, Lee Bains and the Glory Fires, Ike Reilly Assassination, and others.
Dan Power departed for Colorado in 2015 to be replaced by high school buddy, Dave Smolarek. The new line up recorded 2017's release, The Dash, under the supervision of producer Kevin Blackwell. R. Mutt was an experimental post-punk / electronic group formed in 1986 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil by Bruno Verner on vocals, guitar, keyboards and sampling (also a band member on Tetine, DivergΓͺncia Socialista, Ida & os Voltas), Karla Xavier, on vocals, keyboards and percussion (also on AKT), Bernardo RennΓ³ on drums, keyboards, electronics and percussion (also on Ida & Os Voltas), Marcos Basho on bass-guitar and Frederico Pessoa, bass-player on the first line-up.
The band was part of a flourishing art-punk scene from Belo Horizonte of bands such as the aforementioned DivergΓͺncia Socialista, Ida & Os Voltas as well as Sexo ExplΓcito, O Γltimo NΓΊmero, Hosana Nas Alturas, Xiitas, Alma Ciborg, Os Contras, Sylvia Klein, Crime-Γpera amongst others.
Making use of drum machines, synths and cheap samplers, R. Mutt's dystopian echoing soundscapes combined glacial electronic instrumentation with female and male half-spoken/ half-sung vocals; folk introspection, dark basslines & metal percussion, with poetic dada-surrealistic lyricism.
The group disbanded in 1989 with Bruno Verner later forming Tetine with Eliete Mejorado in the early 1990s in SΓ£o Paulo, and vocalist & keyboard player Karla Xavier forming the all-female post punk outfit AKT with Sandra Coutinho (of As MercenΓ‘rias), Biba Meira (of Defalla) & Dequinha (BruhahΓ‘ BabΓ©lico), and later on, The Gilbertos with her partner Thomas Pappon (also on Fellini).
