He has also released solo albums under the alter-ego Bobby Digital. In addition to the Wu-Tang Clan and his solo releases, RZA was also a founding member of the rap group Gravediggaz where he used the name The Rzarector.
He has made cameos in several movies including Coffee and Cigarettes, American Gangster, Gospel Hill, Life Is Hot in Cracktown, Ghost Dog, Funny People, Repo Men. About.com named him 3rd on their list of best hip hop producers of all time
Born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, RZA spent time in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as a child, where his father had a convenience store in the Hill District.[1] A young RZA also spent many years living in North Carolina with his uncle. RZA began his hip hop career in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a member of the trio Force of the Imperial Master (which subsequently became known as the All in Together Now Crew after they had a successful underground single of that name). The group consisted of future Wu-Tang members and his cousins GZA (then known as the Genius) and Ol' Dirty Bastard (then known as Ason Unique, the Specialist, and the Professor).
Once this local band dissolved, both he and the GZA attempted to kick start solo careers. With the help of GZA's friend (then owner of Jamaica Records) they both secured single deals with album options at successful labels, GZA going to Cold Chillin and RZA to Tommy Boy. GZA ultimately released the Words from the Genius album, but RZA's stint at Tommy Boy ended with only the 1991 EP Ooh I Love You Rakeem to show for it when he went to jail soon after its release. GZA's album flopped, and the two cousins became determined to conquer the hip hop industry on their own terms. Throughout most of his youth he enjoyed watching various kung-fu movies and purchasing countless albums which he would later sample in most of his music
Booby Trap
RZA Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When I was young, I slept with a battery on my tongue
So when I spit, the impact with the sting of a stun gun
At full blast, rock your cradle, fatal razorblades graze you
Split you open, stitch you back wit a staple
I'm football head, I put your head
Gold from the Panama Canal, Alabama gal
Got me laid up on my nuts like kapow
B O B Boy's fast as Bruce Leroy
Meet the rap Galactus, blow planets off his axis
My glock is plastic, my dick is magic
Stretch up the Power you like Mr. Fantastic
Stop, it's a booby trap
Wouldn't you rather have a Digi or a Scooby Snack?
Digi Snack yeah, while we living in a booby trap
Yo, when it comes to this mic device, you get ate
Like the Gingerbread Man tryna cross the lake
Or the Winchester, call my white son Lester Poindexter
Tell 'em bring back the black mack, strapped with two extra
Clips, where's the natural, words inside the apple
Pot holes in the street, it cracks the Jeep axle
Shrivel your heart to a raisin, shorty star gazing
Yeah, he got steeper than dunce, once he start blazing blunts
Beef and get drown in Hunt's
Your flame get toast, your best bet to punt
I lounge like a hungry jaguar into aqua
Trying to catch a fish that multiply like the Magua
Pocket fat be Jabba the Hutt, Clan gallops up
Feel The Force of my steel but you can't count the caliber
Digi, Digi, Digi, all inside your city
Microphone on the roam like Capone and Frank Nitty
Stop, it's a booby trap
Wouldn't you rather have a Digi or a Scooby Snack?
Digi Snack yeah, while we living in a booby trap
Stop, it's a booby trap
Wouldn't you rather have a Digi or a Scooby Snack?
Digi Snack yeah, while we living in a booby trap
I don't got a taste for blood or flesh skin
My mind like Professor X from the X-Men
One line ‘cause mc's to write their albums down
Devils only come amongst you if you allow them now
Do to trading they infiltrate with persuasion
That desire to rob and steel and make slaves of all
Living luxury destructively, conductively
Improper nature, privately and publicly
Man so stupid when confronted by something he don't
Understand, he shoot it, the whole world's polluted
My earth gave birth to a universal, change us
Scribes reflect the Child born in the Bethlehem manger
Devils try to steal me of my intellect, rob me of my culture
Like they white washing sculptures
Like they snatching down my posters
But it's been caught through the eyes of Minolta
Stop, it's a booby trap
Wouldn't you rather have a Digi or a Scooby Snack?
Digi Snack yeah, while we living in a booby trap
Stop, it's a booby trap
Wouldn't you rather have a Digi or a Scooby Snack?
Digi Snack yeah, while we living in a booby trap
In "Booby Trap," RZA, principal member of the Wu-Tang Clan, raps about the ways in which individuals are trapped by societal constraints and how we can break free from them. The lyrics contain veiled references to certain politically charged issues, such as the environmental damage that businesses cause, societal inequality, and how these issues contribute to racial tensions. RZA uses his unique wordplay to make these themes more accessible to his audience, all while showcasing his renowned lyrical prowess. When he mentions "Stop, it's a booby trap," he's pointing out that many people live within societies that don't allow true freedom, and instead, people are often forced into positions where they must navigate dangerous, complicated environments in order to survive.
RZA is also trying to highlight how people's mental and physical health is often compromised by living in a society with so many problems. The overall theme in the song is the fight for freedom; as he is calling to his fans to rise up, stand against these traps and fight for their independence, his lyrics serve as a call to action for his audience to unite and take action against the societal restrictions that hold them back. RZA sees himself as a member of a new generation of hip-hop artists that are pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo, and "Booby Trap" isn't just a call to action for his audience, but for himself as well, as he's fighting to break free from the societal traps that he and others like him have to endure.
