The Golden Lotus mixtape is Ra-Grim's debut to the World. The album name and concept is inspired by Ra-Grim's spiritual lifestyle. He is a disciple of Enlightened Himalayan Master Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanath. The mixtape includes instrumentals and lyrics that were Divinely Inspired. The aim and goal of the mixtape is to Evolve Humanity's Awareness, and it is done through raw alternative hip-hop, and a fusion of old school and new generation. Tracks feature production by Roc'Well, co-owner of Leek92 Music Group, Ra-Grim, and YF. Tracks also feature Ra-Grim's mentor C-Rayz Walz, KO-P and K Rizz two prominent members of LEEK92 and many more. Ra ends off the mixtape in a unique way with a Cosmic Ambience / Hip-Hop instrumental that he produced, which aims to put the listener in a meditative mindstate.

Fun fact: Scythe's are not practical as weapons. Sometimes farmers would use them in an uprising because it was what they had. This would make the grim reaper using one less of a warrior and more of a farmer.
But there are also battle scythes, which were specifically made to be weilded in a fight.

Another version is Azrael from Lucifer, she was mentioned as Lucifer and Amenadiel's sister but doesn't show up until episode 326 (S3E26). I always loved Terry Pratchett's stories on his Discworld version of the Grim Reaper, especially the one in which his mortal apprentice had to take over because Death had a midlife crisis. I hope that when the reaper came for him he came as an old friend which is the most you can expect from death. By the way what a great idea to get Caitlin on board, can't imagine a better collab.... unless LED Zeppelin and Rush were doing a gig together.

One of my favourite portrayals of Death/Grim Reaper is from the comics by Jenny-Jinya. She raises awareness for a lot of animal issues and Death in her stories is so sweet and you sympathise with him. He just has to do his job but tries to comfort the animals he takes at the same time.

In Norse myth, the underworld has a goddess, not a god, of death. In Celtic myth, the Morrigan, also a triple goddess, is the goddess of death and war. There are precedents for female "reapers."

I'd love a little commentary on how the entire costume of the grim reaper became as fixed as it is. The raggy , full-length hooded robe or cloak garment is pretty fixed now. Does it originate with monks? Older mythological references? regular farm fashion plus deterioration and black for death? Also, with everything else so fixed, it's interesting that death's face goes from skeleton, to white ghost face, to wizened old man(in the tarrot) , and is often hiding beneath the hood entirely, which implies a fair bit about the unknown. It'd be fun to explore the history and meaning creation of that.

As always a wonderful episode, showing us the origins of our ideas and how they connect to the real world. I never knew that the 3 Princes story was so significant artistically. I had heard of it, but the idea of it being the first European personification of animated corpses. I've been getting increasingly interested in this cryptid series. Don't know if the creators would be interested to look into this, but here's a native Alaskan story I heard of years ago.

A girl went outside of her village along with some dogs overnight, and was going to travel at night. One of the dogs suddenly pawed off its skin at the head, and told her she's in danger. To live, she'd have to settle in for the night, to which she agreed to do so. The dog put the skin it tore off back on, and the girl went to sleep. The next morning, she woke up to the group of dogs massacred all about the area, undoubtedly in exchange for her life, though I can't remember if the messenger dog lived or not.

I'm sure this version is very inaccurate as it's a story I heard years ago, and I'm sure the story was about a specific area, and not for any theme of safety because I've known many people in those rural areas to travel at night

Death is often seen as female in Spanish speaking countries too (the pronoun used to refer to Death, "La", is exclusively used for female nouns which the spanish word for Death, "Muerte", counts as. We refer to Death as a concept or person as "La Muerte")

This personification reminds me of the Indian belief of death talking the form of Yama and his assistants - The Yamadutas (Sanskrit: यमदूत), who wield a whip (made from all the materialistic attachments) instead of the scythe, to pull out the soul of the dead.
Yama, quite like the Grim Reaper, is pictured in various advertisements that help spread awareness, such as road safety or in recent times, to protect oneself from the pandemic.

I liked Dead Like Me, it had a comedic take on death in a lot of their cases and Mandy Patinkin's food obsession was a good running gag, all their business meeting took place in a restaurant and the fact Reapers have to get a day job to pay their rent was a nice touch. Food solves every problem, have some waffles. I even watched them filming some scenes around Vancouver during it's production.

If memory serves, Terry Pratchett described Discworld's Death as a little bit old-fashioned, hands-on, and having an appreciation for the personal encounter. That would be why he still was hanging on to his scythe when the Deaths of other universes had switched to combined harvesters.

One of the most iconic portrayals of the Grim Reaper in Western Animation is Grim in both Grim and Evil as well as The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy! He's a well meaning guy, voiced by Greg Eagles(current voice of Aku Aku in the Crash Bandicoot franchise)and considered a Butt-Monkey since he was treated terribly by two kids who hired him. There's plenty of Reapers in popular culture to pick out, but another meaning of death(aside from other personifications such as Thanatos and Chronos)goes by the title of Dance Macabre, aka the dance to death. Another example is a Japanese entity known as the Shinigami(translated from Japanese as Death God, since the former wife or sister of Izanagi called Izanami, who died giving birth to the God of infernal flames Hinokazawa), but those are related stories to tell, but not for long.

If I have my Japanese mythology straight, the Shinto religion also portrays death as a bunch of human-like figures that watch the mortal realm and harvest the lives of people who are about to die and they are called "shinigami" which in Japanese means death god, god/s of death or spirits of death.

Side-note: In Norway, the plague was personified as an old woman wielding either a rake or a broom. If you saw her using the latter, it would mean that the entire village would get swept away by the plague. If she used the rake, however, then some few would survive. Her name was "Pesta", meaning quite literally "The plague"

I think my favourite interpretation of Death is the one from sir Terry Pratchett's novels. An infinitely wise being that doesn't quite understand human things like plumbing, door handles and swings but is still fascinated by humans. Be it in a way that a ratcatcher admires rats. And he loves cats and some curry, has a white horse named Binky and a daughter, apprentice and later a granddaughter named Susan. And old Albert, his servant. He's very powerful but cute.

The painting at 7:00 is by Salvator Rosa and is called 'Human Frailty'. The woman in the picture is Rosa's mistress, and the child is their infant son who died of plague. I first saw this painting when I was a small child, when my mother took me to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, near where we lived at the time, and I saw it hanging there. It has haunted me ever since.

If you want one of the best depictions of Death, read the Discworld books. There are a few focusing on Death himself, but he appears in all of the books but two, out of 41. He is one of my favorite fictional characters ever.

That "Bowling Death" AIDS PSA is pretty wild. It was used quite effectively in Vincent Ward's The Navigator. And that's a pretty trippy movie too.

I'd never given much thought to the grim reaper before. It was quite interesting. I'd love to suggest a monster from brazilian folklore for the show. In native tupi guarani myths the will o wisp phenomenon is interpreted as the boitatá. It is said to be a fire many eyed serpent that protects the woods. Anyone who fixes their gaze upon a boitatá will become blind and insane, or i some legends it will eat your eyes. Pretty cool stuff

Also, as an Australian who was a child at the tail end of the AIDS pandemic and didn't experience it personally, the first time I saw that grim reaper ad I cracked up. Death is bowling! The people just fall over like skittles really suddenly when Death's bowling ball hits them! It's very unintentionally hilarious.

I love the bubonic plague (black death) because it gave us the plague doctors and a creepy personification of death.

Actually quite recently I found out that there's actually another death entity from Greek mythology.
Macaria : goddess of a more blessed death.
A minion to her father Hades and
Said to be a more merciful counterpart to the god Thanatos.
Other than that, amazing video as always!
( although I do hopefully wait to get a full-blown video on werewolves because I'm curious to see how they started off)
