IT WAS YOU
Race Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why do I do just as you say?
Why must I just give you your way?
Why do I sigh?
Why do I try to forget?

It must have been that something lovers call "Fate"
Kept on saying I had to wait
I saw them all
Just couldn't fall till we met

It had to be you, it had to be you
I wandered around and finally found the somebody who
Could make me be true, could make me be blue
And even be glad just to be sad thinkin' of you

Some others I've seen might never be mean
Might never be cross or try to be boss, but they wouldn't do
For nobody else gave me a thrill

With all your faults, I love you still
It had to be you, wonderful you, it had to be you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Race's song "It Was You" is a confession of a man in love who can't help but obey his lover's every demand. He wonders why he does as he is told or why he must always give in to her. However, he doesn't mind it at all because he has found the one person who makes him happy, no matter what. He believes that it is fate that brought them together and made him wait for so long until he met her. Despite meeting many people before, he couldn't fall for them as he did for her. He believes she is the one for him; the one who could make him feel true love and even make him happy by just thinking of her, even in sadness. He explains how others might be good, but no one could ever replace her or give him the thrill that she does.

The lyrics reveal how the man obeys his lover's every command without any word of complaints. He is completely happy and content with everything she does or says, as long as he gets her love in return. The lyrics also show how the man believes in fate and that it was meant to be for him and his lover to meet. He couldn't fall for anyone else, and he believes that she has faults, but he loves her regardless.
