Horizon
Rachael Yamagata Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The last time I laid my eyes upon you
You were blowing kisses
I was waiting in the car
Something had died yet
Everything around kept turning
Don't even know where you are

[Chorus]
Somewhere along the line we lost the horizon
I've been looking around, up and down
Nowhere there
Someday I hope to find the horizon
I've been all around the world and nothing is clear

The last time I held you, it was head to heart
The curtain was drawing
I left you sleeping so sound
If I had known forever
After we would stay apart
I would have whispered
All the things I can't tell you now

[Chorus]

I don't believe in you
Like I so wanted to
I hope you're asking the heavens above
To forgive all the damage you've done
And if I didn't teach you anything at all
I hope that you learned how to love
But I doubt if I ever talk to you , I don't know

[Chorus]

Nothing is clear, no, no, no!
Nothing is clear to me now at all
Nothing is clear, oh nothing is clear,
Nothing is clear to me now at all
Nothing is clear, nothing is clear,

Nothing is clear to me, nothing is clear,
Nothing is clear, nothing is clear.

Overall Meaning

In Rachael Yamagata's song Horizon, the singer is reflecting on a past relationship that has left her feeling lost and uncertain. The first verse sets the scene of the last time they were together, with the singer watching as her former partner blows her kisses before leaving her waiting in the car. She acknowledges that something had died between them, but life keeps turning even though she doesn't know where her partner is now. The chorus repeats the idea that they have lost the horizon, with the singer searching for a way to move forward and find clarity. She has traveled all around the world, but nothing seems to make sense anymore.

In the second verse, the singer recalls the last time she held her partner close, with the two of them lying together as if they had forever to spend. As they fell asleep, she left without saying the things she wishes she had said, knowing that they would soon be apart. In the final verse, the singer admits that she no longer believes in her former partner the way she used to. She hopes that they are asking for forgiveness for the hurt they have caused and that they have learned how to love, but she doubts that they will ever talk again. The song ends with a repetition of the idea that nothing is clear to the singer anymore.
