Sweet Dreams My LA Ex
Rachel Stevens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, hang your red gloves up,
coz theres nothing left to prove now.
Hey, hang your red gloves up, baby
no one cares but you.

What planet are you from?
Accuse me of things that I never done,
Listen to you carrying on
Cheating another love song

If i were in your shoes,
Id whisper before I shout
There you go playing that record again
Find somebody else to talk about
If I were in your shoes
I?d worry of the effects
You?ve had your say now it?s my turn
Sweet dreams my LA ex

You letting off full steam
Till the light comes back to you now
Hey is it all it seems
Is it all you dreamed and more?

What planet are you from
Accuse me of things I?ve never done
Listen to you carrying on
Cheating another love song

Does it make you feel a man?
Pointing the finger just because you can
I spell it loud and clear
Baby that tongue?s not welcome around here

You turned the city round (LA Ex)
D'you think I give a damn (LA Ex)

D'you think that I'm afraid of (SEX)
Sweet dreams my LA EX

Overall Meaning

The song Sweet Dreams My LA Ex by Rachel Stevens is about a man who cannot let go of the past and is still bitter and angry about their break up. The opening lines, "Hey, hang your red gloves up, coz theres nothing left to prove now," suggests that the man should stop fighting and let go of the past. However, in the chorus, the man accuses the singer of things she never did and continues to play a record reminding him of the past.

The singer suggests that if she were in the man's shoes, she would approach the situation differently and not continuously bring up the past. She warns the man that his bitterness and anger are only affecting him and that he needs to let go so they can both move on. The lyrics, "Does it make you feel a man? Pointing the finger just because you can," highlights the man's need to put blame on someone for the failed relationship.

In the end, the singer wishes the man well with the lyrics, "Sweet dreams my LA ex." Overall, the song is about moving on from a break-up and letting go of the negative emotions that come with it.

Fun fact, this song was actually given to Britney first as a response to JT’s “Cry Me a River”, but she passed and decided to go with “Everytime” instead.

@SleepyPanda0226

Felktl09 Good choice! Everytime was such a classy response.

@silentreader77

Britney wrote a lot of response songs, Rockstar, Guilty, Look Who's Talking Now.

@princesssarah6413

Here, here.

@GodsFaveSim

That’s because she wrote everytime herself.

@Chris-tn9bf

this version wasn't the one pitched. it's similar, but not the same. the one pitched to britney was called "phony lullaby" and it had a different chorus, though the rest of the song was pretty much the same.

oh also the song was reworked into yet another song which was translated into korean as "chocolate love" for SNSD and some other kpop group for a collab, and the instrumental of that reworking's demo was used as the backing track from brooke valentine's song "blah blah blah"

The guitar sounds just like the one in Me Against The Music and this also has something from Toxic.
So cool Bloodshy & Avant have this song to Rachel 😍

@grey9587

You can imagine this song with the voice og britney 💖💖 it would be awesome. But Rachel killed it, i love it

@Dakingbones

I’m surprised no one noticed that this song sounds much like something Britney would sing and no on realized this was actually a response to cry me a river of JT but Britney passed the chance to be one to sing it
