Defying Gravity
Rachel Tucker Lyrics

Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by
The rules of someone else's game
Too late for second guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap
It's time to try defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity
And you can't bring me down
Mmm-mmm
I'm through accepting limits
Cos someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change
But til I try I'll never know
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost
Well if that's love it comes at
Much too high a cost
I'd sooner buy defying gravity
I'm way up high, I'm defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity
And you won't bring me down
Unlimited
My future is unlimited
And I just had a vision
Almost like a prophecy
I know
It sounds truly crazy
And, true, the vision's hazy
But I can see it
I can feel it
I swear I'll be so high
yeah yeah
So if you care to find me
Look to the western sky
As someone told me lately
Everyone deserves a chance to fly
And if I'm flying solo
At least I'm flying free
To those who ground me
Take a message back from me
ah yeah
It's time to try defying gravity
I'm way up high, I'm defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity
And you won't bring me
You won't bring me down
The lyrics to Rachel Tucker's song Defying Gravity are about breaking free from societal constraints and refusing to conform to the expectations of others. The first two stanzas reveal that the singer has undergone a transformation and has realized that they have been playing by someone else's rules for too long. They acknowledge that it’s too late to second guess themselves and that they must trust their instincts, regardless of how scary it may be. This is where they proclaim that they will try defying gravity and they're not afraid to do so.
The third and fourth stanzas go into more detail about what the singer is defying - societal norms and limits placed on them by others. They realize that they’ve been too afraid of losing the love and acceptance of others, even if it comes at too high a cost to themselves. The singer decides to defy these expectations and try to reach new heights, where they can be free of these limitations.
The chorus repeats the theme of defying gravity and shows that the singer is not afraid to take that leap. They’re confident in their vision and proclaim that their future is unlimited. The final stanza invites others to join them in this journey and to recognize that everyone deserves the chance to fly. The song ends with a defiant declaration that they will not be brought down.

Daily reminder that there are plenty of women who've played this role other than Idina and we should give them a whole lot more credit. This is astonishing.

Those riffs and hold at the end can cure cancer, I swear it. Just so, so, so good!
@godise96
There is nothing like hearing her voice fill a theater. I got to see her in 2012 in London towards the end of her run, and she was outstanding. The audience was electric. It made for an unforgettable experience, she is truly one of the very best.

I saw her in New York. Truly outstanding!

That "to fly" was electrifying.

Everyone who has played the role knows how hard this song is, and Rachel hit it out of the park. I saw her back in 2016, but I don’t remember much since I was younger. Seeing this made me so happy, and I want to see it again now.
