Arguably Rachmaninoff’s most famous prelude. The G minor prelude is a challenge tackled by many, and is a masterpiece both in its composition and in its performances. The opening is an instantly recognisable theme that we see repeated throughout the prelude, always being in the background somehow. The B section, after the prelude’s opening (around 1:29) is one of those melodies you’ve heard somewhere, but are unable to place it. It finally returns to its stoic and heroic march, ending in a quasi-cadenza style so typical of Rachmaninoff finales.

The performer here is none other than Sergei Rachmaninoff himself. His interpretation is rather different from other pianists’ interpretations. We see Rachmaninoff’s use of rubato many times which does not serve to detriment the piece; instead serving to amplify its best moments. Interesting to note as well, is the ending. Most pianists would end Rachmaninoff’s prelude with a soft chord as indicated by the music. Yet, Rachmaninoff does not do so — instead choosing to end the prelude with a loud final chord, reminiscent of a bang. It signifies completeness in the music, and is an artefact found nowhere else in recordings.

I hope you’ll enjoy the first upload of a piece of music by the great Rachmaninoff on WS. It was requested by a good friend Alex Fedorov as a dedication for his grandfather’s 79th birthday — the number of years passed since Rachmaninoff’s death. It is also his grandfather’s favourite piece. Uploading such a magnificent prelude was an honour for me, Alex and Ivan Fedorov. Thank you for the request.

Magnificent is the only word to describe both Rachmaninoff’s playing and his music.
