Governmentality
Radical Noise Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Guess who provokes the streetwars around
Cascetheads built their copstate in the end
Taste the fear of the game called "stayin′ alive"
Govermentality - Be cruel to poverty
If silence is golden, it's time to squander it
Freedom is limited to ownership
Fight your own, fight no to own
Let the table′s turn
Govermentality - Be cruel to poverty
The lyrics of Radical Noise's "Governmentality" criticize the IMF, Worldbank, and multinational power structures for their role in fomenting street violence and constructing a police state. The first line of the song refers to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, international financial institutions that provide loans to countries in need, but that often impose harsh policies and conditions on recipient nations. The lyrics suggest that these institutions are responsible for inciting street wars and unrest.
The second line references "cascetheads," a derogatory term for police officers, implying that they have built a "copstate" or a society in which the police have unchecked power and control over the populace. The lyrics urge listeners to "taste the fear of the game called 'stayin' alive'", implying that the struggle for survival in such a society is a constant threat.
The chorus of the song repeats the word "governmentality" and exhorts listeners to "be cruel to poverty," suggesting that it is the responsibility of the government to alleviate poverty and improve the standard of living for its citizens, rather than perpetuating inequality. The final lines of the song encourage listeners to speak out against oppression and let the kingdom burn, implying that the current power structures must be dismantled in order for true freedom and equality to be achieved.
