Smith & Wesson Blues
Radio Birdman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went downtown
For something to do
Couldn't find nothing,said I
Couldn't find nothing to do
I was hanging round in bars
I was wasting time
Your face made my past
Look like a lousy dime

Cos you're never alone with a Smith & Wesson baby
You're never alone when you come round here
Wild kinetic rivers of sorrow
Riding to hell on rails of fear

Sitting in restaurant
Waiting for 6 A.M
The waitress was rough
And the milk was skim
Sunlight blasting throgh the window
Nearly drove me blind
Just like the light
On the front of that 12.05

Cos you're never alone with a Smith & Wesson baby
You're never alone when you come round here
Wild kinetic rivers of sorrow
Riding to hell on rails of fear

Night eyes shining
Like Valparaiso street lights
Wasted dogs were hanging round the dawn
Visions fading down
The streets of science
Lizard king is
Leading me on

Cos you're never alone with a Smith & Wesson baby
You're never alone when you come round here

Wild kinetic rivers of sorrow
Riding to hell on rails of fear

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Radio Birdman's song "Smith & Wesson Blues" describe the experience of being lost, aimless and ultimately hopeless in a city where danger is always present. The singer of the song finds himself wandering downtown with nothing to do, looking for something to distract himself from his own thoughts. He spends his time in bars, but it's all a waste of time. It's only when he meets someone who carries a gun that he feels a sudden sense of security, that he's never alone with a Smith & Wesson. This line suggests that the singer has become so disillusioned with life that he needs to rely on violence and the threat of it to feel safe in his environment.

The second verse further emphasizes the bleakness of the situation. The singer finds himself in a restaurant, waiting for 6 A.M., presumably because he has nowhere else to go. The waitress is unkind and the milk is skim, small details that add up to a larger picture of a very unpleasant experience. The sunlight hurts his eyes, just like the light on the front of the 12.05 train that will take him to some other undesirable place. The final verse describes the city as something almost apocalyptic, with night eyes shining like streetlights and wasted dogs hanging around. The Lizard King, a reference to Jim Morrison, is leading him on, suggesting that his only escape from this desperate situation is through drugs or fantasy.
