05 Sail To The Moon
Radiohead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I sail to the moon
I spoke too soon
And how much did it cost
I was dropped from
Moonbeam
And sailed on shooting stars

Maybe you'll
Be president
But know right from wrong
Or in the flood
You'll build an Ark

And sail us to the moon

Sail us to the moon
Sail us to the moon

Overall Meaning

In "Sail To The Moon," Thom Yorke, the lead vocalist and songwriter of Radiohead, uses the metaphor of sailing to the moon to imply idealism, ambition, and aspiration. He speaks of sailing towards unreachable goals and accomplishments that are beyond comprehension. However, the line "I spoke too soon" suggests that sometimes his statements may be premature, and this may have consequences that he did not expect. He may have committed himself to something that he didn't really want or couldn't handle. The line "And how much did it cost" further highlights the price one pays for ambitious dreams and goals.

In the next few lines, he addresses the listener with a kind of warning. He implores them to make ethical and moral decisions if they were to become the president. He warns of the imminent disaster that may arise if one doesn't stand for the right principles. The line "Or in flood, you'll build an Ark" is another biblical allusion to the character of Noah, who was commanded by God to build an Ark to escape the flood. It is a cryptic reference to being able to survive the consequences of your own actions and decisions. The refrain "Sail us to the moon" is reiterated on multiple occasions throughout the song, emphasizing the importance of reaching for the stars regardless of the adversities that must be faced.
