Genie let out of the bottle
It is now the witching hour
Genie let out of the bottle
It is now the witching hour

Murderers, you're murderers
We are not the same as you
Genie let out of the bottle
Funny how, funny how

When the walls bend, when the walls bend
With your breathing, with your breathing
When the walls bend, when the walls bend
With your breathing, with your breathing

With your breathing
They will suck you down to the other side x4
To the shadows blue and red, shadows blue and red
Your alarm bells, your alarm bells

Shadows blue and red, shadows blue and red
Your alarm bells, your alarm bells
They should be ringing x12
This is the gloaming

Shadows blue and red
Shadows blue and red
Your alarm bells
Your alarm bells

Shadows blue and red
Shadows blue and red
We're alarming
We're alarming

And the walls bend, and the walls bend
With your breathing, with your breathing
And the walls bend, and the walls bend
What is he doin' what is he doin'

This is the gloaming [Repeat: x 4]

Overall Meaning

gloaming
The lyrics of Radiohead's song "Open" are open to interpretation, but one possible meaning is that it is a commentary on the dangers of giving in to our darker impulses. The line "Genie let out of the bottle, It is now the witching hour" could represent the release of something dangerous or uncontrollable, while "Murderers, you're murderers" suggests a condemnation of those who would harm others. The repeated line "When the walls bend, with your breathing" may symbolize a loss of control or a feeling of being overwhelmed.

The chorus of "Shadows blue and red, your alarm bells, they should be ringing" adds to the sense of danger and unease, suggesting that something bad is about to happen. The repetition of "This is the gloaming" throughout the song adds to the ominous tone, with the word "gloaming" referring to the time of day when the sky is just starting to darken.

LOVE how The Smile fleshed this one out for ‘A Light for Attracting Attention’.
I was curious why Thom re-used the ‘No one gets hurt’ line from ‘Codex’ for it, before realizing this predates that! So cool.
I kinda like that he repeats himself sometimes, like ‘I don’t know why I feel so tongue-tied/I don’t know why I feel so skinned alive’ on ‘Cuttooth’ and ‘Myxomatosis’.

Chase The Art

That's great. Only the true, deep fans would ever acknowledge that - and to them (us!) It's a fun little Easter egg if you will.
Just last night my brother was mentioning to me that this new MF Doom verse on Cheat Codes references his old tunes over and over. Incredible stuff - both here and there.

Also “there’s another way out” on Mk 2 off of in rainbows b side and waving a white flag.

Interesting, I think it's entirely their right for whatever reason. I know Beatles and Sting often end songs with lyrics from other songs. Often in early versions things can be placeholder lyrics of course, in my brother's band the singer also had "emergency lyrics" he'd turn to if he forgot where he was in the song :D

Regarding Codex I also find it to be very close to Pyramid song, both are about jumping in a river or lake, not wanting to feel pain.

I remember hearing True Love Waits live on guitar only in Oslo, sept 10th 2001, didn't get published until A Moonshaped Pool(!).

Anybody else in tears after The Smile performed this?

CL8 ON

Makes me feel glad to be alive. And that maybe all this is real after all.

Me three, I was at that show and was bang opposite Thom as he sang it. Such an other-worldly experience, up there with seeing them do Videotape at Hammersmith 2 2006 for me.

Lou Chvs

Attended the 2nd show as well, cried my eyes off during this one… That voice is my best friend ❤️

Drenwickification

I was lucky enough to have attended the 2nd show and I was just amazed by this song. I’d never heard it before, but just loved it instantly.
