Godspeed
Radney Foster Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dragon tales and the water is wide

Pirate's sail and lost boys fly

Fish bite moonbeams every night

And I love you
Chorus: Goodspeed, little man, Sweet dreams little man

Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings

Godspeed, sweet dreams

The rockets racer's all tuckered out

Superman's in pajamas on the couch

Goodnight Moon, we'll find the mouse

And I love you

Chorus: Goodspeed, little man, Sweet dreams little man

Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings

Godspeed,sweet dreams

God bless mommy and match box cars

God bless dad and thanks for the stars

God hears"amen"wherever we are

And I love you

Chorus: Goodspeed, little man, Sweet dreams little man

Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings

Godspeed, Godspeed, Godspeed, Sweet dreams.
(Random "ahh's" until end)

Overall Meaning

The song "Godspeed" by Radney Foster is a heartfelt lullaby filled with imagery of childhood fairy tales and bedtime rituals. The opening lines "Dragon tales and the water is wide, Pirate's sail and lost boys fly, Fish bite moonbeams every night" set the tone for a dreamlike atmosphere where anything is possible. The mention of dragons, pirates and lost boys evoke images of adventure and imagination, while the fish biting moonbeams is a fanciful way to describe the magical.

The chorus of "Godspeed, little man, Sweet dreams little man, Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings, Godspeed, sweet dreams" is a promise of love and comfort to a child, wishing them a restful night's sleep. The use of "Godspeed" is a way of saying "have a good journey," which implies that the child is about to embark on a journey into the magical world of dreams.

The second verse continues with the bedtime theme, referencing popular children's books and characters such as the Rocket Racer, Superman, and Goodnight Moon. The final lines "And I love you" bring the song back to the central message of love and security that is being conveyed throughout the song.

Overall, "Godspeed" is a touching and nostalgic song that speaks to the universal desire to protect and comfort those we love, especially children.

Ok so Radney I know im really late discovering this one but I just did, and let me tell you it touched me not only for you and your son and how difficult that had to be, but also my own experience. My wife passed away when my son was only 3 and the second I heard this I pictured her singing this to him from Heaven. Thanks for sharing such a personal song with all of us.

I would play this song in my car after taking my boys to school. I would think of therm as little boys and would cry thinking of their tiny faces and how fast they are growing up.
