Dancing with Character
Rae Morris Lyrics

Keep it light on your toes and forget what you know
Time to take the floor
Put my hand on your back, feel your body react
You are a natural
We can jive 'til our footsteps travel a thousand miles tonight
Keep it light, you'll be led, hazel eyes

He was dancing with character
Such a wonderful dancer, it embarrassed her
He was dancing with character
He was always a fan of her and married her
Now he's dancing alone, losing control
Moving from the memory in his bones
Dancing with character and he'll never stop dancing 'til he's back with her

Got a room, bought a house
Tried to save a good amount to start a family
Love is all when it lasts, now she only ever dances in my memory
As the language is fading, I find that the only way to talk is through my moves
I'm with you, hazel eyes

He was dancing with character
Such a wonderful dancer, it embarrassed her
He was dancing with character
He was always a fan of her and married her
Now he's dancing alone, losing control
Moving from the memory in his bones
Dancing with character and he'll never stop dancing 'til he's back with her

Now she's gone, is she free?
And is she watching over me?
Now I'm here, just me, so will anybody dance with me?
Keep it light, you'll be led, hazel eyes
In the night, you'll be there, hazel eyes

He was dancing with character
Such a wonderful dancer, it embarrassed her
He was dancing with character
He was always a fan of her and married her
Now he's dancing alone, losing control
Moving from the memory in his bones
Dancing with character and he'll never stop dancing 'til he's back with her
He was dancing with character
He'll never stop dancing 'til he's back with her

I find it so admirable that Rae Morris explores the conditions of those around her, rather than just her own. Bravo!

Ever since I learned the backstory of this song it always end up giving me emotional goosebumps. I think it's my favorite off of her album, so I'm glad she decided to make it a single.

@Reign "It’s a beautiful love story about two old people that happen to be my best friend’s grandparents, and they’re from Blackpool. They went dancing together pretty much every night in the local workingmen’s club – jive dancing – and sadly, Hazel passed away a few years ago, but George still goes and dances every night at the club. From what I’ve heard, he holds a lot of his memories of Hazel in the movement and in the dance. I just thought that was beautiful. It definitely felt like a new way of songwriting; on the first album, I was very insular with where I found inspiration from. It was all about my own thoughts and feelings, but I think touring and growing up a little bit and having great conversations with people made me realise that you can actually, as a songwriter, have empathy and really find amazing tales to tell through meeting other people. I’ve learned quite a lot about songwriting through doing that." She said this about the song
